JSkillz... you do realize that it takes a whole hell of a lot more than a mic and some software to record something worth listening to, don't you? You might want to do some research and actually READ about compression, eq, mixing, gain staging, bit depths and sample rates, file formats, etc. etc. I have a feeling that even if you did have a "box full of gear", you wouldn't be able to even track something. Are you even aware of the learning curve within a digital audio application alone? Stop posting nonsense and READ, READ, READ, LEARN, LEARN, LEARN.... then APPLY WHAT YOU'VE READ AND LEARNED! Then come back here and ask questions and people would be more than happy to help. By the way... there is a neat feature on this board called SEARCH!!! I'm sure that if you learned to use it, you will find most of the answers to what you need to know.
