Well guys, you have been hard at work on this and I appreciate it very much!

Lots of information to digest and homework assignments. I'll have to put this all together and get back with you.

Thanks and I'll talk to you soon.

Same polebarn, different use

Well, after 5 years, here I am with similar polebarn size with different application. Pretty much want to convert my 24 x 16 x 12 high stall of my polebarn into a nightclub. Currently I have purchased 1000 sq ft. of Ultratouch R-19 for $460 (yeah, got a good deal from a contractor that had leftover and wanted to get rid of it). Here are some pictures.

Questions:
#1 How would I soundproof the ceiling?
#2 Once I fill the walls with Ultratouch, do I just need to put in the 5/8th drywall?
#3 How do I soundproof the wall with the big sliding door?
#4 One side already has R-13 fiberglass in there from previous owner. Should I put in drywall, 2inch Polystyrene, and another drywall?

Thanks for your help guys. If you're still around!

Yea, I'm still around.:)
Answers.

1. There is no such thing as "soundproof". Only degrees of "transmission loss". AND it is only as good as the "weakest link". AND how much transmission loss are you trying to attain and at WHAT frequency do you want to go down to? For example, 45db at 25hz? That is the REAL question. You can't design assemblys such as doors, floors, walls, cielings, roofs etc for transmission loss untill you DEFINE what it is you are trying to achieve. That is the problem.

Additional info

First off, the floor is concrete.

These are the speakers I want to use.

2 Yorkville LS800P
2 Yorkville EF500P

I live in Northern Michigan and the neighborhood I live in has a private road, therefore to say the least, there are about 5 homes all scattered around me. Nevertheless, I still want to be respectful where when I walk into their house 200 feet away that I can't hear any bass or highs. That's the tranmission loss I'd like to attain.

Frequency Responses:
LS800P: Frequency Response (Hz +/- 3db) 45 - 150
EF500P: Frequency Response (Hz +/- 3db) 50 - 16k

To answer my own question:
#1 I was thinking of installing drywall (5/8) and then putting whatever leftover R-19 insulation I have on top of it

:eek: In the middle of a residential neighborhood???? Have you checked your zoning? How about Liquor Licencing? Have you applied for PERMITS? If this is a commercial enterprise, then I may have to back out of any recommendations, as commercial construction is a whole nuther ballgame. All I know is in the states I have lived in...Nightclubs are a PERMIT nightmare now. AND EXPENSIVE. Especially since the fire in one that killed a bunch of people a few years back. I think you might want to talk to your local building Inspection Department and THEN get back to us.

Additional information

Sorry. Didn't mean a true nightclub where I'll be charging cover and selling liquor. It's going to be my own personal 'nightclub'. Pretty much a place for me to jam and for friends and family to hang out without dealing with smoke.

i'd think about using the R19 in the ceiling and R13 in the walls. use RC to decouple 2x 5/8" drywall. Get Rod's book on home studio construction for many more details on how to really do it right. presumably your neighbors are several hundred feet away?

one you have the isolation done - i'd put in some large corner traps for bass and some polys hung off the ceiling. add absorption where else you need it to tune the room. that should suffice for a personal club...

for the slider - you can frame out a section to add a second interior slider.

FYI, For those of you interested, there is a bulletin board (forum) dedicated directly to barns at BarnsBB.com :-)

One cool thing is that they have a moderator that is a Professional Engineer that peeks in from time to time and answers questions about designs and construction.
