I just bought a Amek TAC Magnum, 36 channel. and when I contacted amek about the patchbay cables I was told that I was 1 of 50 people in the U.S. to be noted as owning one. I feel blessed, then I found out that in Eurpoe the things are everywhere. well everywhere decent.

Got it a couple of days ago...will post more pictures as we are rebuilding the studio around the new console!

Thats a beautiful thing there Downside. I just bought a big D&R Merlin a few weeks ago and am loving it. My second D&R console now:D BTW, you won't be missing any Avalon's once you hear your Octagon;)

I was fortunate enough to get 10 people to help me move my Merlin and it was still a pain:(

Did you get it thru Paul down in Texas?

It looks like Downside is in the Netherlands so he probably got his straight from Duco:D

I however did get mine from Paul down in Texas. Hell of a drive. :( This is the second D&R I bought from him. :D

well have been quite busy the last couple of weeks...we had to break down a wall to get the octagon in...and we decided..well uhm..if one wall is down, why not rebuild the whole recording room area :p

So started 2 days ago with the first sessions (a week before planned but guess the clients were as enthousiast as i was haha, they almost forced me  )

try running the first session without even getting the chance to really studie the console..took me 10 minutes to figure out the routing to the nearfield systems whaha  But now all sounds are flying in surround through the room ( 7.1 SDDS !!!!) with the help of two onboard joystick....oh, and not at least about 10 zilion untesten new solderings whieeee...living on the edge....

photo's :o

Downside, you made alot of progress in a short amount of time and the console looks great from what I can see. The picture marked today seems a little dark, hard to make out anything other then the outline of console.

He Guys, an update on a really really old thread! Bit I guess it is an interesting one.

I will try to explain why such a big console as the octagon i bought 2 yearslitterly made me money, and will make money for me for the rest of my life.

I bought the baby, and was able to earn the investment back in about 5 months (bought it seconds hand, so didn't pay the full amount.) After a year i decided to stop the studiobusiness not because i wasn't able to make the money needed to run the studio, but the exact opposite. Having such a console, it is fastly known in audioland that you are perhaps in interesting engineer. After about 6 a 7 months i was asked to work some freelance jobs in broadcast...12 months after buying it i decided to switch fully to that market. Nowadays I sit behind neve's, lawo's and ssl on a daily base, have all the newest goodies available, and somebody else pays the bills :D

So my advice to people who think they cannot afford something like this...do not be scared to easy to make an investment...if you do it wise and consider everything else over an over ...go for it!

A big car on your driveway is gonna cost you a lot of money and will never make you 1 dollar profit...a console will (or at least you might earn a part of the investment back)

Yesterday I sold the octagon to a studio near paris, france...and i know for sure after having talked a lot with the new owner..this baby is gonna provide him with a good career!

thats a very heartfelt story!

kinda like a romance novel..

man buys mixer, mixer makes him money, man can't keep up mixer, man moves on, mixer gets new home.

congrats with the job though. neves yummmm.

::Sob::
That was... SO... BEAUTIFUL, man.

PS My next mixing board: a $500 Alto thing. I'm pooooor.

I started with a $200 samick console  long long ago...

you'll get there if you want :)

yeah, all in time.

hey for $500, you can get a lot..

search craigslist enough and you can find some sweet deals.

like Yamaha 01v's for $300-500, Mackie VLZ's, Onyx's etc.

my boss got a VLZ 16(04 or 40 i cant remember) for $300. he got an o1v for $300 with a free SM57. I almost got an 01V for $350 with a roadcase..

$500 is plenty to spend, if you go with used gear.

I've got a Mackie 1202 VLZ for only $170, it was a steal. :)

Someday I'll upgrade...

What cities are you working in? Who was it that was impressed by you just having that board? Did it help in the sense of renting out the place to other producers/engineers?

Musicians around here only know the name Pro Tools. I haven't ventured into the large format market yet, I just have a Ghost, but in a town with probably at least 20 nice consoles I don't see where it would be such a sure thing. Maybe I backed the wrong horse but I haven't found that owning my Radar Nyquist has affected my marketability in anyway.

I agree with you that owning a higher caliber of equipment puts you in a different league but there are still a lot of location and market factors that will determine how great of an investment it is going to be.

yeah, but they don't know the difference between the real deal TDM and LE :D :D :D

Tex, you are absolutely correct in your statement. If I was living in Nashville and tried to setup a studio overthere from scratch and try to work my way up...i do not guess people will say..damn, he might be interesting..i think they will say...what a fool :D

I setup my studio in an area where there were little studio's. Though there were homestudio's trying to build up themselfs all around me, I managed to stick with my head out of the field...simply by daring, which the others didn't.

It's all about circumstances. If you think..this will never ever happen for me..stay off..ik you think...I just might have a little ieniweenie chance...i'd go for it, but that's me :p

Nothing ventured...nothing gained.

I was designing websites on evenings and weekends 2 years ago and working full time as a graphic designer for a print shop (I was 30 yrs Old then). I took the risk of going out on my own. Got a $15K business loan, bought equipment, rented a space and now 2 years later my business I growing very well.

I have been homerecording for some time and now I am recording projects for local singer/songwriters. That business is in it's infancy but you plant a seed, water it and it will grow.
