Best sounding album you have ever heard?

Interesting choice. The general consensus I've heard is that is the bands worst album, at least from a songwriting point of view.

I'm gonna go with Smashing Pumpkins, Gish. They got some really great sound without all the ridiculous over-production of some of the later albums

Also anything by Pain is good. For independent production, they get excellent tone and harmonies.

I always thought "Gish" was the most overproduced. That is...not counting anything in their discography bryond "Melancholy..." :D

On that note, I like pretty much anything Alan Moulder / Flood put their hands on. To prove that point, I even like THE KILLERS new one.

Here's a few that I think the production is so solid that you can identify any track from the album instantly because of the overall sound.

older:
BEACH BOYS "Pet Sounds"
BEATLES "Magical Mystery Tour"
PINK FLOYD "The Wall"

newer:
APPLESEED CAST "Peregrine"

I should have more I know I heard some that stood out, but nothing is coming to me rite now.

I am curious about your Robert Johnson picks. Those are some old recordings. They are amazing songs and he was an amazing guitarist, but I just don't understand why you consider his recordings some of the best sounding ones.

I suppose because they are just that...virtually the opposite of refined. So there is a vibe of authenticity and immediacy I suppose as opposed to highly sophistocated and premeditated.

It's like people who love really old scratchy vinyl recordings. There's a warmth there that is nostalgic, rough and ready.

Or like people who like all the imperfections in Beatles recordings, like the sound of John Lennon opening his mouth before he starts singing on Glass Onion.

For heavy music, I would definately have to say HellYeah. I bought their cd the day it came out just because I like to support the Mudvayne guys, but DAMN this cd blew me away. The recording is amazing, I've never heard anything like it my life. It's the only thing I've ever heard that I can describe as brutal. It's so powerfull and in your face, but at the same time its balanced and natural sounding....I can't even describe it. They've got Vinnie Paul on drums and they recorded it in Dimebag's home studio.

Black Album - Metallica
Abbey Road - Beatles
Good Monsters - Jars of Clay
Dark Side of the Moon - Floyd

Same with their song Oh My God.

One of my fav. songs of their latest CD.

hmm believe it or not. Nevermind By Nirvana. The guitars sound great. The drums are really nice, vocals sound kick ass and the bass is good. What a well recorded, produced, mixed, and written album that was.

Aside from that... I really like the way Opeth albums sound (beautiful layering)... and Dying Fetus have suprisingly pristine sounding recordings (heavy, much?)

Tommy Emmanuel's CDs. Endless Road and some songs from The Mystery. Nothing sounds better than an amazing guitarist playing the best sounding acoustic guitar ever made. ;)

Two I haven't 'seen'!

These are two albums that if you haven't heard them, need to be checked out. One is by the great Michael Wagener, and it sounds stunning!

Hydrogyn - Bombshell

The other one is a little known group, called Feinstein. The album is 3rd Wish. Pick it up, the mastering is stunning....AND, believe it or not...it was recorded on ADATS!

"Kid A" and "Amnesiac" by Radiohead. They are both chilling.

The song "Hyper Chondriac Music" by Muse.

The song "SRXT" by Bloc Party.

While I'm here, here are some other ones that I like-- I use them to check out my turntables / hi-fi set up.

"Exodus," BM&TW

"Joe's Garage" FZ

"Nightfly" Donald Fagen

oh, and I bought some used Melvins CDs this summer. They were really great-- a lot of the musical value was in the recording/production. Unique sounds, inventiveness, surprises and humor

Any album that when listed here, will allow this idiotic twenty-seventh-generation rerun of a thread to die already.

Lord knows I need one! :o

Honestly, though, ez, aren't you suprised that it took 95 posts before "Aja" showed up? It's usually in the first ten posts, right up there with "Pet Sounds", "Sgt. Pepper", "The Black Album", and anything by Lyle Lovett, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Radiohead or Tom Waits. :D
