slinger6, what instruments are you recording? What kind of music? How many channels do you need? Do you need a DI included?

As much as I like the Hardy pre's, versatility would not in my opinion be the strong point. Kind of a one trick pony (but a beautiflul pony at that). I would have to vote more for the Phoenix mentioned above, or the Great River MP2nv as well. Not because they necessarily sound the best, but because "versatility" and "not too colored" were mentioned as requirements. Personally I love the API preamps, but mostly I just think they are extremely cool on things with really fast transients and things that you really want to "punch" and be "aggresive" Probably not my first choice on Vocals and certain other things. Therefore not my first choice for full versatility. But, just because they aren't my first choice doesn't mean I would ever complain about or hesitate to use them on anything

I've recorded quite a few "self release" CDs for bands on equipment I'd be embarrassed to mention here, and have more people who want to record with me - so I'm moving to a larger house (i.e. "larger recording space")and going to gradually start upgrading equipment as I'm getting more serious about recording as a business. I'd like to add peices that are quality enough I won't outgrow them quickly. Right now the only peices of "quality" gear in my system would be a pair of Distressors, an AKG 414, and a Royer 121.

To answer your questions, I am recording basic blues and rock band stuff - mostly guitar, bass, drums, and vox. I don't need a DI included. And I usually need one more channel than I have available

although it has a certain color to it, i would highly recommend the ua610 tube pre or the ua2610(dual) its hard to quatify how cool these units sound.
also for all around use id go pick up an avalon ad2022 class a tubepre, (dual channel transparent as hell, and all around good for cymbals, vocals, hell damn near anything.
