HELP!

I am trying to get a modern distorted heavey metel bass sound like those found in bands like, slipknot, soulfly, faith no more etc(springy, holow and lots of presence)

I know this is a peice of string question but I cant seem to get a good start point.

I have a warwick thumb 5 BO and a sansamp DI.

TA!

Record a dry bass track.

Use some reamping gear to record another clean track (or just use the original dry track)

Reamp a dirty track.

Now, mix the two final tracks (clean and dirty) using a high pass on the clean track. Then put a low pass on the dirty track.

This gives the power and spunk of the clean and adds the dirty nasty stuff from the other track. Combined, they should sound phenomenal.

Ah...don't forget about the other bass stuff like compression, yada yada yada...

You're gonna have a problem getting any super-huge grungy warm mids out of the Warwick. It's sorta made for that scooped, slappy bass sound in my experience. A Fender would probably get you closer to the sound you're looking for.

Get a guitar amp and an SM 57... split the bass signal and send one to the amp, crank it up and add a little overdrive; the other dry track direct. Look for a spot where the mic sounds good; start 6" from the center of the cone and move to where it sounds good. Mix to taste.

I just listened to "Duality" by Slipknot. That bass is a mic'd cab. Maybe that sound is not what your after? Can you give a specific song that you like the bass in?

help!

Cheers for the replies guys!!

I love the reamping idea with the high and low pass filters.

I'll try running a clean tone through my guitar pod xt and distort it up some.

A really good example of the sound I am after is on the track
"just so you know" by American Headcharge at 3.17 ish...

another great example and some of the best bass sounds I have ever heard is that of bassist "Static" from the band Anyone

Slipknot was probably not the best example as it's similar to the sound I get now except mine lacks the width and fidelity.

Paul Gray also runs some odd tunings(I run ADGCF)

Cheers again
Al.
