Looking for a new Bass...

The first one sounds like a nice studio DI. The second has more personality - like Mel Schacher's Grand Funk Live bass (IIRC, that was a Jazz). As a bass player, I'm drawn to the second.
I was serious about trading the Fender BTW... 8-)

I see the sound you are looking for because I got it just by puting an TS9 like overdrive with gain to 0 and that push warmly the mids.
You can have more precise mids using a booster even an overdrive.

What really sealed it for me is when I ran the Ibanez through my usual Fender effects...
That was really weird!
But, it showed how hard I was trying to make the Fender sound like something it's not lol.

Lol... Yeah', definitely tried boosters and gain... 4 band comp... even tried a guitar amp.

What's happening now, however... I'm getting a lot more tone with much less effort.
Its much easier to tame the mid-highs of the Ibanez than to add them to the Fender ;)

What makes you Fender tricky, tone wise, is that a P Bass has only one spit-coil pretty much in the middle of the end of the neck, and the bridge. Yours has a (presumably) split coil AND a J Bass pup un the bridge. Balancing them can be tough.
Notwithstanding, I liked the first one better.
Not sure exactly what tone your looking for. Any examples? Flea? Claypool? Jaco? Jameson? Kaye?

Depends... I like lots of different music, lots of different styles...
But, I'm really diggin' THIS sound!

Did I mention the Ibanez even feels better?
Great Neck! 8-)

It certainly does sound solid when mixed with the drums. The first clip you shared was hard to judge -- I watch a lot of more solo-oriented bassists, and I feel like the tone you're getting is just so different from what they do that it just sounded quite off to me.

I would attribute the Ibanez' growl to it's active EQ paired with the two high-output humbuckers, which the Squire has none of. It's nice. . I like it a lot. Kinda creeping into that Chris Squire territory 8-)

When I bought the squire (about 10 years ago I think) I loved the active Eq knob (mine does actually have that)...
BUT,
You're right. The humbuckers with 3 band active Eq and boost is an entirely different instrument 8-)

Check this out. He's playing a Yamaha RBX765A 5-String, near as I can tell. Starts off going through AmpliTube's bass preamp as well as it's own active electronics. This sounds pretty tasty to me, similar to your second sample earlier.

That does sound good!

Is it just me, or are all the DAWs and plugins starting to look alike

Com'on man... lol
A home recording site where folk don't want to show off their basses?
I don't buy it!

Besides maybe two, I'm done buying guitars that will take me a while to find/afford. I sold a bunch of amps and have everything I want.

Somehow, I fell into buying basses, so I'll play.

I found this one so cheap that I couldn't not buy it at the Fall Philadelphia guitar show two years ago. I was looking for a Byrdland but the only one there was more than I wanted to pay. I bought this one on the last day.

It was filthy - I mean filthy. The guy I bought it from had gotten it in trade along with some other things. It's never been broken. IIRC it's a 1964. I wish it was cherry, but beggers can't be choosers!

The map I bought for $600 and I use for most of my bass. Sometimes into a JMI 1x18 old Greenback!

This crazy bass I found in an antique store in Rhode Island. It was $179 with a hard case! Someone must have had an SG Bass and broke it because the tuners, bridge, knobs, pickup, and pots are all Gibson but the neck and body are home made. Some day I'll find a husk and swap it back but it is pretty cool. I keep round strings on it:

I found this one at a guitar center. I went in and it was $1400. Once or twice a year I would go back and eventually, it was $899. It's really fun to play and with flats sounds very cool! It's my fav bass to play!

When I bought it they brought the OHSC out and it even had the case candy!

I have these two. The one on the left I found in a pawn shop for $250 because it didn't work. There was a cold solder joint on a pickup. For that price I figured even if I needed to change it the deal was there. It's MIM. I don't use it much anymore.

The Bass VI I bought new for $799 when they were reissued a few years back. I wish the pickups were better, but it is ok for the money and does the job.

Last Christmas I bought a Squier 51 style P-Bass on Amazon for $299. They only had the white. I bought a new pickup for it from Duncan. It hung on my wall for about a year and I plugged it direct in the other day and it's crazy good! I wish I didn't buy that pickup because it doesn't need to be changed.

I don't have a photo of it but they still make them. It's like this one. For $1000 it would be a great bass. I can't believe how good it sounds. Maybe it's the API and the 560 but what a great sound!

@noah330 Would you consider parting with that Ampeg?

I have three basses. A Fender P with flat wounds, a J fretless with flat wounds, and a Yamaha BB with a J bass pup set and flats. (I slide, and I hate squeak)
If I was on a desert island, I would take the P bass all day. The difference is the strings. I got some serious funk out of it with the round wound, but I'm a James Jamerson kind of player, so I changed. The fretless requires flats. BUT the Yamaha has the most funk and slap of any bass I've played. EVEN with the flats, it's nasty!
You can slap and tickle that badass all day. And all without effects. YMMV

Another bass you may like the sound of is a Ricky 4001. My bass player has one that is really fabulous and also a joy to play. It has a narrow neck and is quite thin, The scale, to me, seems pretty long, but that's just the way Rickys are built. It has a very nice range of tones especially in the mid and upper range. That might give you the "mid, springy" sound you're looking for.
