I have three basses. A Fender P with flat wounds, a J fretless with flat wounds, and a Yamaha BB with a J bass pup set and flats. (I slide, and I hate squeak)
If I was on a desert island, I would take the P bass all day. The difference is the strings. I got some serious funk out of it with the round wound, but I'm a James Jamerson kind of player, so I changed. The fretless requires flats. BUT the Yamaha has the most funk and slap of any bass I've played. EVEN with the flats, it's nasty!
You can slap and tickle that badass all day. And all without effects. YMMV
