ADAT Tape static problem

I recorded a song on ADAT tape this past weekend. It mixed down just fine to my computer at that time.

I went to re-record one of the tracks today. Now there's a short section in the song where there is a huge amount of static and the meters go crazy on Track 5. Track 6 also has some static but not as much, and doesn't peak the meters.

I tried recording over the section but the staic remains even after recording silence. The tape looks okay but it must be damaged somehow. I've never had this happen on any tape before.

It means having to redo the whole song....don't have any more tracks to redo the tracks (rhythm/lead guitars) that are corrupted.

Ever heard of this? Wonder how it got corrupted?

I wonder if there actually is some tape damage, but you haven't wound the tape far enough (one way or the other) to be able to find it. Just stopping the tape at the problem point and ejecting the tape will spool up the damaged area of the tape back into the housing again, where it can't be seen.

Have you transfered all the tracks into the computer? Record them digi' back onto the Adat on a new tape?

Oops, week late. :)

I don't have the tools to do that. My friend has a way of doing that with ADAT/IO16/Sonar. I already re-recorded all the song further along on the same tape. I'm thinking of doing a DVD backup of all 4 of my master tapes this weekend if my friend is available.
