Hi,

I'm a french analog lover :) . I'm working with a Tascam Tsr-8, a revox B77 MKII, a tascam M224 and a few more things...

I will be in New york next week for 10 days and I'm wondering where I could find some cool cheap used analog stuff? (Mics, preamps...)

Any idea?

Thanks

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase,
pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaase, pleeaaase, please... :)

I assume that you mean New York City (not the state)...

I don't live in the city, but even if I did I would not know for sure, maybe with exceptions of few places. ... maybe
Also depending which part of the city you are going... that place is pretty big and traveling within it, finding places etc ...hmmmmmmm? , how should I put it??? ... - good luck :D as I always say : the good part is, that the food is good pretty much everywhere in the city :p
I would imagine, what you could do would be: when you are there ... get the local directory/phone book and look for various musical instrumets and equipment stores... or get on-line and do search that way, and see for yourself. See the stores descriptions if they sell used stuff (most of musical instruments/gear stores do). You never know what you may find there in used gear section/corner... ..Or just give them a phone call and ask if they have some analog gear at the moment (or specifically about something you are looking for) ... simple as that. ;)
Also, asking people on the street will not going to help you much if at all, but it may be a "fun experience" :D
I've tried to search something... you get the whole list of places... which I have never been so have no idea. HERE is the link , which I'm not sure if it will work on the b-board. I've started the search HERE

..have a good time in the city.
/respects

Finding stuff for "cheap" in NYC is not going to be easy i'm afraid...notorious for selling things at "premium" prices. in other words, the chance of scoring some sweet analog piece in the back of some store is a loooong shot. like ZEE said, just start walking into stores you come across in the phone book/internet maybe you'll have some luck...I myself have not found any amazing places with cool cheap gear.

Honestly, New Jersey is the place to find something nice...but maybe someone else can get more specific wit that...good looks and luck!

You could try looking up the Mandolin Brothers which is on Staten Island. Which is where I got my Tascam 38 from. I don't know exactly what they would have. But I think they deal more with vintage acoustical instruments. And I doubt cheap. http://www.mandoweb.com/

but that's the way to do it (Especially in the City, where the life is always "on the run" ): If you want tascam 388 for cheaper - you look in vintage mandoline store. If you want an antique mandolin for cheap - you look in "Rugs and Chandeliers" store. :D
also, if you want to look like Daniel (Dee) Snider in 70s and you are over 40 y.o. or so - forget about it :D :D :D .... however, you can take a ride through Long Island and smell the air ;)

unfortunately i can't think of a single store that would fit your needs. i USED to - in 1998 i was walking down either 6/7/8th avenue somewhere near 14-23rd streets and had time only to pop my head into a pawn shop while my fiancee-now-wife was looking for a secret warehouse sale of some fashion gear.

this place was CHOCK full of reel to reels, vintage tube receivers, just all the stuff to make you drool. some very nice marshalls and fender amps in there too. i should have broken off the engagement just to stay in the store, but like a patsy i left.

i've tried to find that place again for the past 8 years. it's like it vanished in the mist. dammit.

That sounds like NYC. :D

Be sure to check out 8th street for some fine Indian cuisine and some really cool Indian music.

And don't walk down the street with a beer in a bag anymore because they will throw you in the paddy wagon with 30 other sweaty, smelly inhebreated people. :D

I've heard the new Mayor has really "cleaned up" the city.

Hello Friends,

Thank you for all the replies!

I understand when you said that NY city is not the place you can find cheaper gears, Paris France is just the same :( but with less choices!

it's becoming very hard to find some old analog stuff. but I keep on looking for... Ebay works great for that!

I'll keep you inform about my trip :)

Bye

I've heard that the mayor ain't new, but rather old nor he's young neither ... :D
And if you're a smoker - forget your french cafe habits for couple of weeks. You can thank Mike for that. It's safe. Oh, and the crime is down too... (have you hear the latest news???) ;)

I hear you may have to keep a sample of your DNA on file pretty soon. :D

East Willage actually has a website: LINK ..., well, it's a music gear store, they say they deal with old gear too :)
heh heh, again, maybe it's just me, but it my case there are more chances that I would drive down to the city just for a cup of coffee and a nice crispy croissant , than for musical equipment shopping (or for any shopping in that matter)....
