703 acoustical properties

So I found a guy locally that has Rockwool but didn't know which one. Says he has a couple dozen bags.
Googling, it looks like it's a pain in the ass to work with but "may" do the same as 703.
I was wondering if this stuff settles over time, making the traps look lumpy...???

Same dude has access to the 2" Knauf. Kinda leaning that way as it looks easier to work with.

Figgered I'd update before I go get my beer. :D

They won't look lumpy you can push em tight against the burlap. They actually turned out a little less lumpy than the ones I made with the rockboard 60 because they were more flexible and easier to push tight into the corners.
I'll try and remember to get some pics of mine for ya when I'm at the studio on Friday.

You probably want RW60 or RW45... I think Knauf do Rocksilk (look at RS60 and RS45).

My experience, the Roxul Rockboard 60 is more effective than equivalent 703. Simple as looking at the density rating...

NEVER mount any of these materials directly to a wall. Put as much space between the wall/surface and the material as you can. This increases the effective absorption at lower frequencies exponentially, otherwise you're wasting money and useful absorption.

Do yourself a favor and wear a respirator when working with any of this stuff.

I cut it on my table saw for a clean cut. Just an idea if anyone has a table saw.

rick old booy - you got your shit going on here my man - looking good........

:eek::eek::eek:

OMG!!!:o I didn't think you'd ever speak to me ever again after my "post" at Studiotits. let alone still consider me a "friend".:o:D

Thank you so much Rod. You know I've kinda gave up over there. It seems no matter what I ask, I get treated like some kind of piriah. Maybe I'm missing something, but in reality, due to my view of the mishmash of opinions on QRD/POLY type stuff, right or wrong, I finally just decided to build a Difractal for my rear wall "closet" for two reasons.

One...if they're good enough for Mr. Lachot...they're good enough for me...REGARDLESS of what Eric and others say about the QRD stuff. Which was my whole point over there.

TWO...I LIKE THEM. Period. Eric says I like "complicated" stuff. Well...I DO..but not because they're complicated. Just because...well...I ain't much different than other designers...like Mr. Manzella says...Studio design isn't ALL science..its as much art/design as acoustics. So, I like the LOOKS. I guess I'm one of those people Scott thinks are ...how'd he put it..oh yea..

The world of studio design abounds with anti-scientific ideas. Clients want cool looking structures that express in physical form a wide range of wacky esoteric ideas. Corrugated diffusers are only one example

Well, I guess he considers Mr. Lachot "wacky" Cause he uses them all the time...every studio he designs.

And frankly speaking, I don't understand something..when it comes to diffusion..IF, LABS use those Polys all over the place for a reason, then how come I've NEVER seen a control room or live room with the same thing?:confused:(except for maybe Eric's Galaxy...I've never seen these kind of polys flying in any studio I've ever seen) Maybe Scott can tell me why he's not using these in his own studio ..especially after saying this....
This is why when a professional is serious about needing diffusion [as opposed to just messing with the clients head and providing some eye-candy] they use a curved plate. If you look in a reverb chamber where maximizing diffusion is critical to measurement accuracy, you will not find corrugated diffusers in the corners, you will instead find curved plates. There is a very good reason for that

Anyway...nuff of that. Thank you again..if you don't mind me calling you...my FRIEND.:) oh, and btw Rod, I haven't been back to that thread. I don't think I'll ever visit Studiotits again cause I've kinda lost interest in that depth of this stuff. Although, apparently, my explanation for my "remark" must have cleared it up..or you wouldn't have spoke to me.:p

Rick,

I don't mind that at all (you calling me friend that is)

Just for the record - even if you hadn't posted that follow-up response i would still be the same - I would like to believe that I am not so small or petty that difference of opinion with a friend makes me throw away the relationship.

You were frustrated - I helped in some part to fuel the fire that led to that frustration - and for that I am sorry - although the answers I gave were the best I could - because sometimes life is just the way it is.

I remember the first time I saw the plans (just a floor plan in the first view) of Power Station's "A" room - and it immediately made sense to me. My boss (at the time - who is also a close personal friend) was laughing as he pulled it out and began to open it up - and he said to me - "OK Rocket (that's my nic in real life - he gave it to me) we have one that is gonna make even you scratch your head - this one is a real challenge."

When i looked at it - and then almost immediately told him that it made perfect sense - that I could see why it worked the way it did - he was dumbfounded - even challenged some of my explanations because Tony had gone completely berserk when anyone in the initial meetings even suggested they understood the room.

So we begin construction - and roughly 2 weeks into it I am having a conversation with the president of Multimedia (who was one of the people there when he blew up) and I am explaining to him why I can make this room work perfectly - and he calls Tony up and says he needs him to come down because some hotshot says he knows the room - and Tony needs to straighten me out.

So Tony shows up the next day and says to me - "So you're the guy who thinks he's so smart that he could figure out what the best brains in the industry can't - well if you're so smart explain to me how and why my rooms work"..... So I did - and as I spoke he got more and more excited because he realized that i did know - and the three suits standing there (including my boss) grew more and more puzzled as he became more and more animated..anyway by the time the project was completed - and I had secretly corrected the design error I found - Tony and I were best friends - and when he walked into the room to test it - and found that it didn't need tuning even he was completely blown away......

Now - I went through this whole thing to make a point - which is this - we all have our gifts and talents - just as we all have areas where we should never venture into..

My boss at the time (Bob) was a Senior Project Manager - went on to become a Vice President - and then to become (what he is currently doing now) Director of a billion + dollar project..... he is extremely organized - extremely intelligent - and one of the best I have ever worked with (we actually have been together through 3 different companies)

I - on the other hand - am extremely disorganized - have piles upon piles of papers and books strewn around my desk - and although i know pretty much where every paper is in which pile (on Adriaen's landing (for example)I had sometimes 5 or 6 piles of paper running as much as 3' tall) I am the bane of the owners because they just don't understand why I can't file things away the way that Bob does....

However - Bob and I understand that his greatest strengths make him what he is - (while mine assure that I will never achieve that - I have climbed as high up the corporate ladder as I ever will) by the same token, mine make me what I am (and he will never achieve that - he has climbed as high as he will ever get in the field of engineering).

While I can make a room sound great - I have not been able to achieve doing so while making it look as beautiful as the designs Wes comes up with (at least not in my mind) -

We all have that which comes to us and that which doesn't.

Your studio is stunningly beautiful - and I have no doubt that it will sound great - so build on that - understand why and how it works- and you then have something which few will ever achieve.

How I make it from "A" to "B" is not important - all that matters (or should matter) to you is how you do.........

Believe me - Bob and I have had some real head knockers - even a few occasions where he actually looked at me and said "you're going to do exactly as I said because I am your boss - PERIOD !!!!!!!!!!!!"

But we never let any of that ruin our friendship...... opinions and methodologies are one thing - friendships are another thing altogether.

I am an odd duck (I will admit)- but you shouldn't worry about ruffling my feathers.........

Sincerely,

Rod

A simple paper mask is fine really...but do wear something. There's no risk of long-term injury, but that stuff is irritating.
