5 String Bass?

:p you guys are really dead set on four strings, huh? Eh, whatever you're most comfortable on, I guess. :)

Wow has this gotten sorta off topic!

My opinion hasn't changed regarding 5 string or 4 string. There hasn't been to much help, just an interesting read so far.

BTW, I don't know if I'd get an amp but just record direct and save my money.

The only thing dumber than a 5 string bass is a 7 string guitar, and vice versa.

I've played a 7 and thought it was pretty cool, but owning one and using it I don't see practical.

I'm a rock and metal guy, who knows, maybe one day I'll be playing some deathcore stoner doom metal or something crazy.

No, it doesn't. But imagine a hypothetical playing situation where you're riffing away in F mostly between the 6th and 8th frets at a moderate clip, and you wanted to drop a low F into your bassline, while still keeping all those higher notes you'd been playing in easy reach.

That's a hell of a lot easier if you don't have to jump down to the first fret and then jump back up, and as you said, why should playing bass be more strenuous?
which is what I meant about being able to play E on the 5th fret.
There's definitely times when the patterns 'feel' suffers if you have to break pattern and jump down to a lot note.
And yes, you could play it an octave higher but frequently that sucks.

I have never played with a bass player who deserved another string.

I wouldn't own anything but a 5-string bass. Not only do I love the extra low notes, but I also love being able to stay in a single position to reach a few of the lower notes that you'd otherwise have to reach for on the low E string.

I find myself using the low B string in every song I sit to record a bass line to. Even if I don't ride a note on the low string at some point, it comes in handy a few times just to fret a note in 5th or 7th position.

The low B string is a cool thing to have available. If you don't like it, don't use it. Thank god they make both 4 and 5 string basses so these guys above who are surprisingly against the B string can have it their way too. I don't understand the opposition, unless they're just bored and haven't gotten in their daily dose of shitting on other people's tastes.

You nailed it. :D

Also, they're not bass players.

bullf*ckingsh*t. i AM a bass player. i play less bass than any other instrument at this point, but that's because i am so f*cking good at it that i don't need to spend a week getting a part right.

I'm not a bass player, and I'm still better at it than people that claim to be bass players.

"Real" bass players lack the chops to play guitar, lack the fine motor skills to play keys, and lack the all-around physical dexterity to play drums. Bass guitars have less strings for a reason.

oh, ok. i forgot for a second that to you, Dee Dee Ramone is the epitome of "real bass players".
