why do we mic the resonant side of a kick drum. however on all the others we record the batter side?

so my kickdrum mic is a D112. i get quite a low out put from it. i record a mapex 22inch kick, with no soundhole on the resonant side. if i cut a soundhole would it give me a bit more. . . oomph?

does anyone have any advice on how to reduce mic spill. mainly talking about on acoustic drumkit here. i have quite alot of spill on my mics and i know its not avoidable but is it reduceable? cheers

i need you guys to clarify something for me regarding recording drums and percussion. i'm interested in software such as ezdrummer and steven slate drums. is there a way i can record my drums live, then the software can replace my hits with sampled hits instead? if so, how. thanks guys
