Electrovoice 635A good for anything in the studio?

I like them on shakers and various hand-percussion... The RE55 is a fine omni dynamic as well...

    "Megaphone" sound ???

The Lexicon PCM80 has a couple nice patches for getting these sounds... "Phone" and "TV Room" are both interesting and useful...

    New Shure Ribbon?

Why the 300 and not a reissue of the SM33 (330)? I've got a 300 but never really put it through it's paces. Have to drag that out one of these days... A total redesign would be a cool way to go though...

I got the deal of the century on Sleazebay! (for a vintage 63' shure 545)

Anyone have any idea of when the 545 was discontinued? I found one in the box recently, NOS, and was curious if they were still making them. This one is mint and never been out of the cellophane...

    Good Kick Mic

"I go along with the D12; the older vintage one. It'll run you close to a grand, but its a tough mic to beat for kick drum." I think you're getting the D12 mixed up with something else... You can pick up a D12 for 250-300 bucks the last time I looked?... But here's the mic I'd get for just...

    ambient microphones

I love to throw a crappy American D22 omni up for a room mic, especially on stuff that I might want to make a little grundgy in the mix later on... Love the sound of that mic in the room...

Does it Need a New Ribbon?

Just on general principle, whenever I buy a used ribbon, I send it in to have it re-ribboned and checked out. (That's one reason I like to buy blown ribbon mics).... I'd highly recommend Stephen Sank for re-ribboning your Varacoustic. He just did a Varacoustic for me, and it sounds fabulous...

When to use a ribbon mic?

I use ribbons all the time for recording live bands in the studio, both acoustic and electric... A single Coles 4038 is my drum OH of choice... A BK11 will also work in that appliction very nicely. I love M260s or M500s for recording acoustic bands, mostly for vocals (although the M500 is...

    Shure KSM 44

It's my mic of choice for a traditional-sounding F5 mandolin sound... Nice solid "woofy" chop on the mando--always hard to capture... Good on banjo too...

I really like The Binaural Skull on a drum OH... Strange enough?

    Harvey- Recording Mandolin Question

"Have you tried the 4033 on F styles??" I haven't... Tried some other SDCs... I really like the Gefell M300...nice mic, very reminicient of a KM84... The KSM32 gets that low end woof on a good F5, though... Really works for me....

    Harvey- Recording Mandolin Question

I've recorded quite a bit of mandolin (you can see the liner notes to "Mandolin Graffiti" here), and have tried all kinds of mics, preamps, and setups, and I just gotta say what a big fan I am of the Shure KSM32 on an F5-style mandolin... The definition is there, the air is there, and the mic...
