I love to throw a crappy American D22 omni up for a room mic, especially on stuff that I might want to make a little grundgy in the mix later on... Love the sound of that mic in the room...

Just on general principle, whenever I buy a used ribbon, I send it in to have it re-ribboned and checked out. (That's one reason I like to buy blown ribbon mics).... I'd highly recommend Stephen Sank for re-ribboning your Varacoustic. He just did a Varacoustic for me, and it sounds fabulous...

It's my mic of choice for a traditional-sounding F5 mandolin sound... Nice solid "woofy" chop on the mando--always hard to capture... Good on banjo too...
