    presonus or art

The preamp in the Presonus is cleaner. The ART has 2 channels though, which could be the deciding factor depending on your application. The tubes in both sound .... grainy. Probably not a sound you'll end up using much. You might find some useful info here...

    Best magazine?

Out of curiosity, why do you say that? Are their reviews misleading? Or just not very helpful? Cheers.

Is there such a thing as "the wrong mic"?

Ah OK, I could word myself better. I get the importance of parity between the engineer's vision and mic selection. But what happens when the mics are so close that it's a toss-up? I mean, "best" in this context, at some point becomes a matter of taste, right? Or, if I have a choice between...

Is there such a thing as "the wrong mic"?

Checking out drBill's awesome drum-mic shootout got me curious. With only a couple of exceptions, the samples ALL sound usable. I could probably pick favorites, or at least exclude a few that I'm not crazy about, but I'd be hard pressed to call any of the examples an obvious winner. So I...

    Mic placement when tracking drums

Agree with Russtopher. Unless you have some kind of treatment above the mics, or high ceilings, the omnis can pick up more ugly reflections. Also, if you can record all 5 mics at the same time, consider using the AKG as a room mic. Get it as far from the kit as you can, and maybe slam it with a...

    Mixing with a Drum Bus

Here's a good breakdown of the parallel compressor technique ecktronic described: http://www.hometracked.com/2007/03/31/parallel-compression-for-fatter-drum-tones/

What are some does and donts with the Firepod?

I've had mine on for 14 months now .. The power's been off only 3 or 4 times, for a few minutes, while I moved things around. I think in general, you'll be fine if you turn it off at the same time you turn the computer off. (i.e. in my case, never :)) It's not bad for the Firepod, no. And the...

Analog Channel / Emulating solid-state console saturation

Gnash5150, it's here: http://www.harddisklife.com/ (as are all the articles Middleman mentioned) The Diamond Bundle doesn't contain a channel strip emulator, but Waves recently released their SSL Bundle which definitely does.

    SONAR 6 Audio Snap?

With repect to jerberson12, I couldn't disagree more with the "pain in the ass" comment. Especially with the 6.2 Sonar upgrade, Audiosnap is HANDS DOWN the best audio-quantizer I've ever used. I cleaned up a 6-mic'd drum kit yesterday in 5 minutes. The same thing would have taken about an hour...

    Kick and Bass Ducking

RComp doesn't support sidechaining. How have you specified the sidechain input for your ducking compressor on track 2? I always put it last in the chain .. Do everything to get the bass sounding right, then as the last step, duck it out of the way when needed. If you're trying to do it all with...

Table: Sonar 5/6 Producer vs. Studio editions?

The last page of the Sonar 6 Brochure has a chart that compares both versions (it's a PDF file, though,) and the press info page for Sonar 6 lists the differences in non-chart form. And here's a chart with the differences between Sonar 5 Studio and Producer.

I can't write out a whole, finished song

Lee nailed it: Successful songwriting depends a lot on finding a process that works for you. I'll suggest one more approach that runs counter to most of the advice above, but maybe that's what you need: Write to a deadline. For some folks, myself included, nothing gets the creative energy...

    bleeding toms

It doesn't really answer your question, but something else to think about is drum replacement. I have little piezo pickups on my snare and kick drum. They don't pick up any useful sound, but I get a little spike every time the drum is hit, and I can run that through Drumagog or KTDrumtrigger and...

    guitar loop EQ?

Arrangement. The layered parts compliment each other musically. I'd say the parts were all done separately, but really, anything he did with his amp, or EQ in mixing, is secondary to the arrangement.
