Recording someone who is on drugs.

I have to admit some people just can't play sober.

This is really scary. When I start to hear/read people saying that guess it is normal to do things drunk or high, I think about people driving cars, operating dangerous equipment and performing critical tasks this way. And we see it every day. I bet that right in this moment someone is being hit by such a driver. At another place there is a cracked guy operating a heavy crane. Or a crazy surgeon opening someone under effect of alcohol.

The problem is not the use of substances, if people did that locked in a room. The problem is that they inject, suck, smoke the shit and want to go outside to 'live the experience' and a lot of people around have to live the crap together with them.

I absolutely hate drugs and alcohol or anything else that puts me down from my natural balance. And I just don't feel myself comfortable in a place where there are people under such substances. And if a customer asked me to get drunk or high before to make my job I would say 'fuck off'.

I am not directing it to you, I just picked your comment to hook my point.

A: My brother died in a drunk driving accident, so I'm a little offended that you would put playing guitar drunk in a safe environment in the same ball field as driving a high speed heavy ass vehicle. Time to step down from that soap box.

B: I totally drink all the time. Just not stupid enough to do anything that would cause harm to anything (except my liver obviously).

C: We are talking about art. A subjective media that has no "right way" of doing things. These people happen to believe that sounding perfect sucks. And they do sound WAY BETTER drunk.

D: If you can't drive, operate heavy machinery, or operate on a LIVING HUMAN BEING without being drunk and/or high then you obviously SHOULDN'T. You sound like one of those "where do we draw the line" guys. The line is OBVIOUSLY when it becomes dangerous for other people. And a band wanting a drunken recording is nowhere near said line.

E: To the OP, if he can't do something, he shouldn't. Double tracking guitars for example... Just pick the best take and artificially double track. Perfect? No. Usable? Probably. Explain the problem and show him how it's not fixable. Even addicts can reason when given examples.

The project is on Hiatus , The dude called me all tweaked out yammering about how he needs to get finished and that I was the reason why the project is not getting done. When I told him that I had over 20 guitar tracks that were mostly unusable , he claimed that I probably mixed them to sound bad, I just hung up the phone , not sure how you mix a guitar to cut out mid-take, but I must of figured it out , either that or when the fucker started jumping around his guitar cord came loose.....I literally have 4 or 5 takes of that happening . Anyway Im done until he pulls his shit together .

I am sorry for your brother but I really couldn't guess that. And I didn't have the intention to be offensive. So I apologize again. But as I said, it wasn't directed to you. I am not over any soapbox. I am not a politician or so. I am just expressing my opinion that I think is pretty valid. I don't know why you are so upset.
By the way, did you read all the thread from the beggining? We have at least a couple posts where mates told that they had their studios destroyed by high people. This is just a small leap to do worse things like attack someone that may result in a severe injury or even death. So, yeah, I put playing guitar drunk/high in the same level.

As you said, they 'believe'. It doesn't mean that this is a truth. I know plenty of artists that do not need to be cracked to do a good job. By your logic the art is being done by the drug and not by the person. But OK, I really won't argue on this. You may have a point here. Sorry, but as I mentioned before, I don't trust on the judgement ability of high people. Normally people that needs to gets high and drunk to do things, will stay like this mostly of time and will do everything under this condition. This is exactly the problem. About you accept the request on get drunk to do your job, OK, this is up to you. I just think that it is not a good idea to use substances just because someone tell you to do that. So if the same band asked you to get full of adrenalin by jumping together with them off of a train you would do that?

I've had people talk to me like that before over their bad recordings. I just delete their tracks and wash my hands of it. People suck, inebriated people suck even more, no one should have to deal with it.

Anyway I agree, that sounds totally not worth the effort. I would tell this guy there won't be any more recordings unless he straightens the hell up.

It's does not take "a small leap" for someone accidentally trashing a studio (super douchbag thing to do, not condoning it) to kill someone due to any substance use. It's a very very large leap.

My point in the first place was that I HATE when people use absolutes when talking about anything. Especially art. Saying "all drunk people suck at music/painting/anything" is not even close to accurate. Even if the only drunks you've come across are of the obnoxious variety. I agree, trashing a studio is a dick move. Most of the people that think they play better drunk just suck all around. It's not necessarily that they only suck drunk. Another FACT is that the evolution of music in the past 70 years has been highly influenced by substance use. And yes. A TON of these guys were drunk/high. ot put them in a different state of mind and they wrote from that place. I'm not saying it's right. I'm not saying you should do anything illegal. Ever. Don't. That's stupid as hell. But as a grown man of legal age I do enjoy the taste and effect of Blue Moon. And I don't mix BETTER drunk. But I don't mix WORSE either.

There is, I would aver, a very great difference between "social" alcohol consumption and being drunk. Certainly if only one person in any give situation is the worse for alcohol it is THEY that are in the wrong.

But alcohol, in great moderation(!) has been used as a relaxant in many areas of life. I shall give a personal example if I may?

Some 20yrs ago I used to shoot competitively, air rifle at Working Men's Clubs around the town (tho I was actually a member of the local RAF association shooting section).

My regime never altered, week in week out. I shot late in the evening and so would fetch up at the club about 7:30pm and order a pint of Guiness* It would take me most of the next hour to consume it and then I would get my second (and last) pint and by the time I was at the firing point, I would have taken maybe two sips. I would shoot my detail and them retire to finish my drink. I believe the small level of alcohol was beneficial as a relaxant, it certainly did my shooting no harm as I was one of the top scorers, regularly being but on shot off a possible and having shot at least two possibles in my time.
The "duty" was "bell" target. A metal plate about the size of a CD set at 6 yards and the "bull" was 3/8" hole (9.5mm) and a clean shot rang the bell. All was shot unaided standing.

I no longer drink. Doctors orders (no saint!) but am not manic about those that do so long as they keep it under control.

Many things are dangerous but also a lot of fun, Alcohol, cars, guns, sex. The measure of the man or woman is how they use these things.

N.B! I would not in any other area of firearms usage condone the presence, leave alone the consumption of alcohol. The WMC rifles were limited to around 7ftlbs ME, would take your eye out but not penetrate much in the way of clothing. Even so I believe that it is still legal in England to have a miniature rifle range on licensed premises and more than one of our older universities have such! Rimfire LR will surely kill you but I have never heard of an accident on any such range in 50 years. The same CANNOT be said for our police training ranges! Most unsafe places there are to learn to shoot!

*About the only drink I miss! For those who don't know it. Black, very bitter and about 6% BV.

My question will be completely out of topic but... Dave, the use of a substance which objective is to improve the performance of the participant on an sportive competition wouldn't be considered doping and for all effects disclassificate him?
