Hello everyone.

I got myself a Yamaha MT2X, to start experimenting with tape-recording, but i'm having my problems.

I managed to find a tape in my grandpas old recordings, that was just as the manual says it should be. (CrO2, 70µs, bias: high)

I'm pretty sure, i've done everything just as the manual says it (there is a very nice step-by-step-manual) - but still, i simply don't get that thing to record something.

Each of the 4 channels got one LED-indicator, that will blink, when the track is selected for recording - that works. When the recording starts, those LED-lights should flash continously, which they don't - that's why i think, that i'm still doing something wrong...

I can hear the sound of the microphone on the headphones, but when i want to start recording, i only hear that nice bavarian Volksmusik of my grandpa... :(

Can anybody give me a hint?

I guess it could be something pretty easy and obvious, for someone who is into this.

Thank you!

Is the record protection tab on the tape knocked out? Read about cassettes here.

Whey would you want to record over the good old bavarian Volksmusik?

Grandpa ....... now I feel old.

Alan.

I read about that in the manual too - the tabs were still in, in the manual it said, it is necessary, to knock them out, and afterwards tape the gaps (?)

I did that, so i don't think thats the problem. (It's possible to push down the "rec"-button, which wasn't without the tabs, just as its supposed to be)

Oh, and its just one tape out of thousands my grandpas got, it shouldn't be a problem. (I asked him though, if i can use it, it seems like its not his favourite artist :) ).

Are you arming a track to record onto? As it's a multitrack you have to arm a track ad also press the record key. I am justing as I don't know the Yamaha at all. It just sounds like its not recording at all but also not erasing.

Alan.

Arm? You mean assigning a track? Yeah, there are three options per track "off - L/R - 1/2/3/4" - i did that too.

It's not erasing anything either, the tape is like untouched...

Yes, assigning a track, however I have run out of suggestions as I do not know the Yamaha well enough to know the control layout. I did try to look at an image (via google) but could not get one big enough to see.

cheers
Alan.

Ok, on the one side i'm glad, i didn't do any beginners mistake, on the other side the problems still there... Usually i'd say that thing is broken, but it's the NOT continously flashing LED that keeps me having doubts. Is there a slight chance, that the tape is too old?

On the main record play buttons, do you have to press record and while holding it down press play to start recording? The flashing light should go on when recording, the flashing means it's ready to go.

Leaving the office now going into the studio, so if you have any more questions I'll answer tomorrow.

Cheers
Alan.

the "play" button automaticly is pushed down when pressing the "rec" button. But i always pushed the pause button first, then the rec&play-buttons, and then released the pause. (That's what they recommend in the manual).

Thank you for your help so far! I'll try some more out tonight.
