I remember parting with, maybe $200, for the privilege of a bleeding edge 2400 baud bi-directional modem. Remember how you had to formulate these magical AT configuration text strings to get the modems to work most effectively (or work at all)?

I remember porting Chuck Forsberg's zmodem file transfer protocol from Unix C to Z80 CP/M. Ah, the memories...

I'll never forget the feeling of finally ditching dial-up and getting high speed back in 2005.
I felt alive.

What's even more amazing is that he said it 13 years ago.

Ah, the memories...
I remember the first time I heard of the internet. It was 1996 and computers just did not interest me in any way, shape or form. Lots of kids I worked with were right little computer whizzes but I couldn't be arsed.
I was hanging with a friend one day around march and we were at her sister's place. It was a real chaotic scene because the sis had 7 kids and one was a baby and the place had a real lively vibe but my mate's sister was into escapology and being a council worker just at the time the more progressive councils were going over to computers and the "information super highway", she'd gotten into the internet. My mate said 'have a look at this' and as soon as I saw computer I just switched off. But she dialed up into this chat room and I read some of the dialogue. It was sick in a creepy sort of way but then she told me they were real people. My main feeling at the time was that it was weird.
A few years later, one of my friends was really into the net and she was forever trying to get me into computers. She even set me up an e~mail address which I've never known the address of because by the time I did get into them, we'd fallen out. While we were friends, she tried everything to get me into the net. She made a great play for on line chess. Spiritual debates. Anything she thought I'd be interested in. But I just didn't want to know. Then I discovered VSTis and had to register them and my wife used to do it for me but being pregnant, I could see that it was just an annoyance if I wanted her to quickly e~mail "Chris" at GMedia because I couldn't install the soundbanks for MTron or whatever so.......

I made the same move in 2005. I didn't feel alive, just richer ! I used to spend so much time on line in those novelty days of 2004~5, our phone bills used to give me hernias !

It might have been dial up but it was well and truly a going concern...
It was. Looking back on it, what I find interesting is that it passed me by for so long before I even heard of it. Lots of people around me knew about it and this brilliant free magazine that I used to get, "Making music" carried loads of gear reviews, many of which featured the new technology. They even had a dedicated column in each edition called "Mr Soft" that specifically dealt with digital and net related music. I bought a load last year and it made for great reading.
I still couldn't get into "Mr Soft" and I can partly understand why it all passed me by !

This thread is so last millennium :D
Last millenium was booming, man. The lick !
