Marshall AVT50H w/ 4X12 cab...thoughts?

The Blackstar amps are pretty damned cool.
It depends on what you're looking for. To my ears I'd compare the Blackstar more to a Mesa sound than Marshall.

The ISF lets you change the voicing dude,

also, strange you think they sound like Mesa cos Blackstars are designed and built by three ex-Marshall guys. :D

I know that actually but I can only go by what my ears tell me.

Played the Black Star at GC last night. Remember I was akin' you about 'em? Anyway, the tightness of the lower end makes me think Mesa also.

Anyway, tube amps wail on hybrids. Clean cleans, and non-scratchy solid state crunch and highs. I've been playing the Marshall VS-265 combo for several years now, and it's just never seemed "quite right."

On the hunt now for 20-40 watts of tubular warmth and clarity.

And I don't think I'd go for the AVT because "it does half-decent cleans". :)

I guess it does better cleans than it's price or 'image' would suggest. I don't think I'm kidding myself but I do hear that 12 AX 7 adding something that takes the synthetic shine off things.

Speaking of Blackstar, I'd have to agree that they're pretty awesome. I have a HT5 going through two Vox NT112 cabs, my first head/cabinet setup. I think the Blackstar's are a little sensitive to when you introduce the gain though, I have mine paired with a HT Boost pedal and it fills out the cleans very nicely. I think the standard drive is great.

I just found out we have a new music store in town, just opened, so I went there last nite. Asked em what brands of amps they were planning on stocking and if they were, by some chance, gonna stock Blackstar and he just kinda looked at me.

"I'm not sure what a Blackstar is but this here's what we'll be stocking."

And every single amp in there was Peavey.

(sigh)

But I'll bring a couple of guitars and plug em in anyway. Lately I've been reading some good comments about Peavey amps. I had a Peavey 2X12 something or other a long time ago and the thing about it I DID like was that it was freakin LOUD.

Ah well, my quest continues.....

Classic 30's a great amp but it's more of a blues/classic rock amp.
I'm not sure what your music style is.

me either. :D

I'm workin on a thrashy metal one right now but I dig and play blues and rap too.
(shrugs)
I'm a freak. :o

you're not .... it does make a difference ............ and distortion in the pre-amp can sound ok.
For instance in my Mark V it's ALL pre-amp for a lotta gigs because you can't get it very loud to start driving the power tubes plus I like to leave it in the 'master volume' mode so I can have overall volume control/boost/fx loop.
So basically for me most of the distortion is going on in a 12ax7 or two.

I've had solid state amps I liked actually so it can be done.
I just don't care for those AVT amps very much. Some personal preference at work here.

What exactly do you think you're lookin' for? Loud is easy, just at power. Didn't read the whole thread. Ya got a cab or speakers that you like, or are you hunting for a combo? Music style doesn't always define preference between tube and SS. What do ya like? :RTFM:

Did you say rap? WTF?! :D

:o
yeah....my kids got me started on rap and I found quite a few that I really like.

I know...I know...

As to what I'm lookin for? I really don't know. I jam a bunch of different stuff (except country :D ) so I don't think I'm gonna find an amp that does it all and I'm not sure that I need one that does.
That's what the knobs n stuff are for right? :)

I'm thinkin a 2X12 combo would fit the bill cuz I'm not playin guitar in the band. Just bass and sometimes drums.

So yeah, basically I'm not really any help in my own quest. :p

This is what happens when society makes it illegal to beat your children. Now we have people walking around with their underwear hanging out pretending to be musicians.

Yea but once you learn how to dial it in properly....

:D

Dude, there's two things kids never encourage their dads to do, one is dance and the other is rap.

I'm not buying it. :D
