but his mixes sound like crap...Yours on the other hand do sound good...and please criticize my track I live to learn...

I don't pretend to be anyone in a position to teach anyone anything. My mixes are no better than Greg's. In fact, he probably has the best mixes and drum sounds on the site (there might be others with better mixes and drum sounds, but they never post what they do, so I wouldn't know). I'm not blowing smoke up his ass, he's probably the only person on this site who's critiques I take 100% seriously.

As far as you saying his mixes sound like crap, you're confusing how annoying you find him and the fact that you probably don't like his style of music. Neither of those has anything to do with how well someone can mix. I hate Rush, but that doesn't mean I think their actual recordings sound like shit.

You version is an improvement over the "reference"...though I'm not crazy about the Kick...it's still too much "click" and not enough "THUMP"...but maybe that's the way you "beat" guys like it for that style of music.

what would you have done to try and get more thump? or does the kick thump enough but the click is to loud for your taste? again thanks for the feedback...

A discussion is precisely what you've got. Thing is, you can't, on a public forum, control who says what or who thinks what or the direction the 'discussion' takes.

You yourself admitted you weren't clear on what you were doing, but the thread is still called "How to mix a home recording".

Simply by the comments you made. It's difficult to take someone seriously as some kind of instructor if they can't actually instruct and they tell you so. You haven't encouraged someone that may want to learn to mix to listen to your stuff. Now they're more likely to do so out of morbid curiosity.

I'm not criticizing you, your music or your intentions, I already said that. Your approach however, was unhelpful. For a start, it's unclear what your aim is because you're kind of ambiguous. A discussion on mixing is one thing. Stating "How to" is another. One may naturally lead to another, often does, as questions arise. But I honestly thought and still do, that it is at the very least reasonable to ask whether you should be teaching when you demonstrate that maybe you have difficulty in that area. I wasn't poking fun at you. It is a reasonable question.

first thanks for the feedback...I definitely need to come up with a better way of going about certain things specifically showing the difference between a process sound and an unprocessed sound on the video. I wouldn't say I'm teaching since there isn't one right way to mix, but more so showing an indepth view of how I do things so if you are a newb or have issues getting certain sounds I've achieved you can see exactly how I did it...Reason I felt qualified to do something like this is because I recently landed a mixing gig with an artist (not a major label artist) but someone who has been performing for a living(no other day job) for the past 13+ years, so if he felt comfortable putting his lively hood in my hands I can't be that bad...FYI its not the artist who's song I'm mixing in this thread...

personally, his balances are good the vocals sit well in the mix, but it sounds extremely digital to me...thin, small, and lifeless I'd think metal would be more aggressive more soul...maybe its the mp3 encoding...

Metal should be thin and without soul. But definitely aggressive.

I didn't know Greg did metal.

Lol for real. The simple fact that you think my music is "metal" pretty much confirms to me that you don't know jack shit and your opinion is not to be taken seriously. Just keep working on those phat beats, yo.

I'm pure metal. If Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had a kid raised by Slayer, I'd be more metal than that.

Metal??? Lol! :D

Teacher - at this point, what are you now trying to achieve with this thread?

I think what is most funny is they way he describes Greg's mixes is EXACTLY how I would describe his mixes. lol

Except I would be more accurate. <seerioos>

I'm so metal that one time me and my band mates were gonna slaughter a goat and go on stage drenched with it's blood but I decided it would be more true to the fans if I fucked it first. Went on so long we had to cancel the show.

  :eek:Woah ! I don't know whether to recommend a priest, an exorcist, an animal rights charity or a psychoanalyst ! :D

This thread is totally awesome.

not sure if its genuine or not but thanks....what did you think of the track?

Oh God no I didn't listen. I just meant that I love threads that start off from Train Wreck Postion 1 and then devolve downward from there.

I don't want to get into a flame war since you seem to have enough of that going on here, but know that Greggo has some pretty good recording chops. If you intend to actually help people, you might stay away from shit-slinging with one of this site's most respected and talented guys. Good luck in all you do.

I actually asked serious questions to a person that wasn't trolling my thread...I hope they respond...

and

See Rami I got the term right this time...TROLLS not spammers :D

Are you the same Miroslav that has the philharmonik plug-in? if so great plug-in...
That would be Miroslav Vitous, a Czechoslavakian bass player who sort of knew Jan Hammer in Czechoslovakia when there was a Czechoslovakia and came to America and made albums with people that were big players or went on to be big players in the then nascent jazz rock fusion scene. He was an original member of Weather Repert but his playing used to drive Joe Zawinul nuts.
I saw him in concert many years ago with Stanley Clarke playing electric bass while he played double bass. It was boring as painting stripes on the motorway. I have to say, having had and heard his stuff and seen him live, I've never been even remotely impressed. Until Miroslav Philharmonik, that is. He's redeemed himself for that !
What has this to do with the thread ? Nothing. A little light relief in the absence of a royal wedding.......
