Dogbreath

Im an ex-spurt
Does the 703 have certain acoustical properties that other rigid insulation doesn't?

I've got some 2" thick pink rigid sittin around. It's Owens Corning 250.
I need to build some corner traps by doing the triangle cuts and stack em up way of building.

What say you gurus of the acoustic world? Any thoughts?

Much thanks. ;)

:laughings:

Troof!

I found this...
http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

and while I didn't find the exact match to my stuff, it was close enough to a match that I figgered I don't know what I'm doing. :p

So I'll just continue my quest for 703 that's not gonna cost $120 just in freight.

:)

on the cheap, look for Roxul Safe. Any local framing supplier should have this stuff- they use it all the time in commercial and multifamily residential construction

Hey dogbreath...where you located? See if SPI has a location near you.
http://www.spi-co.com/

They sell Knauf which is just as good as 703...AND they sell it in 2",3" and 4" thick ...4'x10' panels. I drove 400 mile round trip to get mine.

It was well worth it. Just cut it yourself with electric knife, tablesaw or whatever. Even a bread knife:D Great for doing stuff like this...(this is just a model of my CR, but the real deal is almost done)

oh, about that Picante thing.....talk about "hot mixes"!:p

:D

:D

Thanks Rick. I checked em out and the nearest for me is Vegas. 5 hours, one way. Have to think about that. Hookers, Ho's and insulation all in one trip? Could be expensive. :p

When's yer CR gonna be done? and where's da pics?

Hey Jeff....is this what you were talkin about? http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--Roxul-Rockboard-60-Case-of-6--RB60.html
Seems like quite a few guys have used this for bass trapping. One post I found said it's better for bass traps than 703.

Never figured this would be such a pita to find without breaking the bank. ;)
Thanks gents...:drunk:

I used the rockboard 60 for my traps. Specs are actually slightly better than OC 703. I ordered form that site (ATS acoustics) Next time around I ordered the cheaper Roxul mineral wool. Specs are slightly worse than OC 703 but the stuff is so much cheaper you can use more of it and still come out ahead. The mineral wool is not very rigid though you need to put it in frames. I bet it would be perfect for superchunks.

Awesome dude :D

Just got off the phone with em and it looks like that's what I'll do. A lady named Lisa found me a little better shipping rate than what mine came up to as well.
:drunk:

Man, I walk out into my room and it's all torn up and lookin like shit, old traps down, drums all over the place...un-useable...makes me wanna kick the wife n kiss the dog. :D

Ballpark, what does that stuff sell for? There's one not that far away from me, and I'd been meaning to buy some OC703 anyway.

Where/when can we see it?
:o As soon as I see the light at the end of the "honey do" list.:p Then I can get back to it. First things first though. I'm in the "process" of building 2 custom computers to finish up my console. EXPENSIVE SHIT though:eek:

Like the Graphics computer motheboard and Graphics cards... holy moly..

motherboard: EVGA SR-2
http://www.evga.com/articles/00537/ $$$$$

2 Qudro graphics cards. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx.html

The reason for this is called Folding. I'm going to try and help in this endeavor.
There is a community that uses home computers(and university mainframes) to unlock the secret of how proteins fold, to discover a cure for cancer.

http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net-folding-home-team/370859-nitteos-f-h-gpu2-farm.html

Hence the need for heavy duty graphics processors. Although, my planned system is a drop in the bucket compared to some of these guys..OMG..unfuckingbelievable:eek: Makes audio computer stuff look like a joke.:p And theres litterally hundreds of these out there doing this work.
Heres whats known as a "Farm"..this is a personal Folding server setup.

is.php

Each one has 3 of these GPU's. Seriously BIG BUCKS!!

is.php

As to the audio computer...well, that one's easy compared to the graphics one. I already have most of the stuff. Just need a good interface. I have a M-Audio 1010Lt at the moment, which is probably good enough for me, but I'd sure like to get a RME Hammerfall Fireface 800:p But thats down the road apiece...WAY down the road.:laughings: I have to pawn my soul just for the graphics stuff.:laughings: And thats not even considering the Raid system either....GAK!! 2 Terrabites worth. $$$$$$$$$:( Oh well...its already taken 20yrs..whats another one or two to get the computer audio shit. Ha!!

But, after I get the honeydo's(finish my bathroom) done and the computers built..maybe I can get back to the acoustics stuff. THEN..I'll let you know. ;) Actually, I'm getting ready to mill out the pieces for the rear wall Defractal diffuser this weekend. Already have the material. It gets machined like this..although mine are a wee bit smaller.:D

Here is the profile of one well bottom.
is.php

Here is 2x6 face being machined on a shaper with a one pass knife profile. These knives probably cost as much as my whole diffuser:D
is.php

Finished face after shaping
is.php

Here they are being assembled into ONE unit. Usually, a Defractal will have 6 of these in one complete assembly. And there may be more than one assembly in a complete diffuser, depending on available space. Mine will have one complete diffuser of 6 units.

Final sanding for insertion of end divider panels.

is.php

Heres what mine will look like when finished. You've probably already seen this, but what the heck.:D

Ok, enough of my bla bla bla.:p

So I found a guy locally that has Rockwool but didn't know which one. Says he has a couple dozen bags.
Googling, it looks like it's a pain in the ass to work with but "may" do the same as 703.
I was wondering if this stuff settles over time, making the traps look lumpy...???

Same dude has access to the 2" Knauf. Kinda leaning that way as it looks easier to work with.

Figgered I'd update before I go get my beer. :D

Ballpark, what does that stuff sell for? There's one not that far away from me, and I'd been meaning to buy some OC703 anyway.

I'd like to inquire for the same thing. Just finished building frames for my 703. Now that I know I have the motivation to actually build these things DIY, it'd be nice to know how much the 4 x 10 x 4" slabs are for future, bigger projects. Thanks!

Hey Dog... Close, but this is what I was thinking of...
http://www.roxul.com/commercial/products/roxul+safe®

...Specs...
http://www.roxul.com/files/RX-NA-EN/pdf/RoxulSafe-5-25-09.pdf

The 4" thickness has pretty much the same specs as OC703.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to find this stuff locally by the truckload. Find a local commercial framing supplier- A company that sells metal studs or commercial insulation should have this stuff on the shelf. This stuff is used as firestopping and sound batts in commercial construction DAILY. Don't pay extra for shipping!!! lol :spank::D

What city are you in/near?

You can find it right from the Roxul website.

http://www.roxul.com/residential/where+to+buy+roxul

84 Lumber (in the US) is an authorized dealer.

I also found out that Home Depot can order it from their contractor's desk, but they only sell the residential Roxul product called Safe'N'Sound, which is kind of flimsy like batt, but actually has slightly better specs than the RockBoard 60. They quoted me $25 per bag of 3" thick 24" x 48" unfaced, (60 s.f. per bag,) delivered to the store free. They have a three bag minimum order. They also had 5" thick available. (You must specify 24" wide or you may end up with 16" wide.)

Spend a little time on the Roxul website and you will better understand the differences between their products. There are a few good videos there too. http://www.roxul.com/residential/residential+videos
It will not droop, will not mold, and will not burn. Good stuff.
