Nakatira

That Norwegian Bastard
I`ve been messin around with some drum recording we did last week.

I`ve added some compression and eq and a little verb on the drum buss.
I`m mainly after input on the drums, I`m not a 100% happy with them yet so any pointers is apreciated.

The guitars and organ are just there as guide tracks, so never mind the glitches:D they were all di`ed and will be recorded once again:)

The whole thing sounds muddy. but i don't if maybe that's the sound you were going for. for me the kick is way too punchy i think maybe a different mic placement would help to get more of a boomy thud. or maybe scoop out the mids in the kick. i don't know it just sound right to me. the toms also lack tone. in fact the whole kit lacks any good definable tone.

just IMHO, don't mean to be mean :)

I can definitely hear every drum clearly, but the mix lacks a bit of brightness. I'm thinking a little high end would help. We could use Greg or Rami here to help out. Cool groove - definitely 70's with that organ part!

Dont worry mate, I need to hear it.

and to some extent I agree.

I want it a bit muddy as thats the sound I like, the kick is not gonna stand out like modern rock, but more like classic rock, and certainly better than this drum sounds.:)
I was trying out some new neve clone-shit on the kick, seems that ihave to go back to my basic eq`s

The toms are suposed to lack tone, in fact that goes for the whole kit, as dead as possible. exept cymbals:)

but thanks again fot the input Its great gettin objectivity into the blend:)

Yeah it too, now sit with a simular impression.
Got these new eq` didelies and I went back to my old ways:D

thanks man, apreciate the input.

I think the toms pretty much sound just about right for what you're going after. Those are 70's sounding toms. I keep wanting to say the rest of the kit sounds pretty bad, but I keep reminding myself that you want it to sound 70's bad. ;)

The snare works for what you're going for. It's not great, but neither were 70's snares. This snare sounds pretty accurate to me. The kick is the weak link. It may be a mic position thing, but I'm thinking that the kick just sounds bad on it's own. It's very boxy. I know you don't want a modern kick sound, but this one can be better. Spend some time tuning it for a deeper thud and punch. I don't know, it just seems like it may be tuned too tight or maybe too muffled? You got a huge ass pillow in there?

You're on the right track though by trying to figure this out with some instruments in there.

Yeah it was quite muffled, I dident use a pillow I used an entire thick featherfilled blanket:D

I think I might be able to get it, I did a huge mistake when I boosted the bottom right before mixdown.
I tried cuttin some bass on it at 60 and it tightened up quite a bit.
Another problem is the use of an eq I`ve never used before.
I got carried away.

I think I`m going back to a channel eq

I think I`ll try a massive cut around 400hz, see what happens.
what you think about the bassguitar lies at the bottom of the frequencies?

example I cut the kick at 80hz and leave the bass down there pluss some at 400 hz, the bass we used is very deep its a Prescision bass with flatwounds.

All of those things will help. And an entire blanket is way too much muffling. :D

I'm no pro mixing engineer or anything, but I've NEVER had to boost lows on my kick drum. Ever. And I regularly scoop out around 400-500. I find that area sounds like ass on kick drums. But you'll need to try it with some bass guitar in there and see how it sounds. Look for the cleanest kick/bass seperation you can muster while still having each piece sound like it's supposed to.

Did have a new go.

Dident add any low end to the kick, pulled out a whole deal in the 400 hz region added some in the 5.k region.

Bass is only added some 400hz

both are compressed a bit:)

Am I gettin closer?

Btw dropped the toms and the bottomsnare on this one, as my main focus was the kick.

Definitely better. The snare sounds better too.

The kick does sound better, although it's still pretty dead. I'm telling ya, that blanket you have stuffed in there is killing the poor bass drum. Some slight muffling in a kick can be nice, but killing all resonance is mean. :p

I hear ya loud and clear.

But there and then I just loved the sound of it, it sounded bigger than life.
I just went for, will tkae head to your advice on the next recording session:)

That may be true, but what sounds good to your ear in a room and what sounds good live doesn't always translate to what sounds good recorded and in a mix. I'm sure you know that many, if not most drummers use totally different kits and cymbals to record tracks compared to what they would use live. To mostof us modest home-recordists, we have to use what we have, and that may mean tuning/setting up our kits a little differently than what we normally like to do playing out live or just banging around for fun.

For recording, I personally tune my kick differently and use a different snare than I use when playing out live.

Thats one of the things I wish I was a drummer for, knowing hoe to tune the kit, knowing why things sound the way they do.

I`ve picked up loads of info on how to make drums sound 70`s.
But tuning the drums and making them sound gold is more of a gift, then theory I supose.

I`ll work more at it and come back with more, I now sit with a slight Idea were my problems come from, so hopefully addressing em should be easier.

Just the 400hz switcheroo between bass and kick was a eureka moment for me.

Thanks for all the help so far:)
