Hello , here's an instrumental I'm finishing up. I've had the guitar parts written for a long time but never recorded it. I did some of the intended vox parts with a piano just to get somewhat of a melody going. Still a work in progress so .. any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks for the listen ..
Godin LaPatrie Nylon guitar - SM57
Alvarez Yairi - AT 3035
Ibanez bass - DI (no amp sim)
MT Power Drums (samples)
Keyzone Classic piano synth - one handed pecking with M-Audio controller
Stock Cakewalk plugins with additional Fab Filter comp. and reverbs
Ozone 8 elements - final EQ , widening and boost/limit

You call it 'Lazy River' but that tune MOTORS along! I like all of your stuff, but this is one of my favs. You make it sound effortless. I put it in my FB page. 👍

I had listened yesterday and I liked what I had heard. Listened to it again today and yup! It's a great tune.

Sounds really good, great vibe to the opening. As dobro says, sounds effortless, loose and easy. If you put vocals in I would love to hear what happens to it.

Songs good - don’t like the drums at all - the Crash’s are fake sounding - Not really hearing the bass - it’s there but very muted - Piano sound good - guitars are a tad ‘busy’.

I thought this was really good. Great playing.

Tones on things are very nice. I liked the levels and balance.

@Papanate mentioned the low bass level. But I thought it was appropriate. Just a difference of opinion. He also mentioned he didn't like the drums. Agree with that - they're not very humanized. The crash, I agree, had a "cheap" sound.

There was a bit too much reverb for me on just about everything. But I tend to like things dryer than most people.

The nits are minor. Excellent job.

Thanks guys for the listen and comments. 😊
@dobro , Appreciate that. Yeah , Lazy River was just one of the vocal lines I kept to keep up with the song. PM me a link to your FB page , I'll follow you.
@60's guy , @PorterhouseMusic , @Deylight , @DM60 , @BTStudio , Thanks for the vote of confidence. I've Really been on the fence about this one.
@Papanate , Thanks for your honest opinion. That's what I'm looking for. I totally agree about the busy guitars. Bass guitar could easily be addressed. I'Ve used MT Power drums on quite a few songs without issue. I may can get the crash sounding better though. Thanks. @TripleM , Hopefully I can addreaa the crash. FWIW , I pretty much always use too much reverb on the first couple of mixes. Seems I always back it off before my "final" mix/master. It seems to always get out of control after the volume boosting. Thanks for all your help. ms

Hello , The link now reflects mix 2. Thanks for the comments and suggestions !
I did some automation on the guitars and side chained them to the piano. The're ducking out of the way now giving more focus to the slightly boosted piano. Bass guitar was boosted and crash replaced with another from the same synth. All the reverbs were reduced.
It's a little too contemporary for my taste but , I'm going to get away from it for a few days until something hits me. Further suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks .. mark

Really like it. People are on about the drums. Maybe it's the level that attracts attention to the sound? I'm fine with the sound, but I would like the sound as much I reckon if you backed off on the level a bit. Just a thought experiement.

I think it would be worthwhile to upgrade the drums and piano to better plugins, if not real instruments (XLN Audio has Addictive Drums and Addictive keys, Modartt has Pianoteq, just to name a couple options).

Good music.

Yeah, jumping on the praise bandwagon.

I think you got this stuff down. From writing to production to recoding and mixing.

All your stuff goes from the ‘mixing forum’ to the Show off forum in my eyes.

Thanks for sharing

Hi @mark skinner
as usual this song showcases your excellent musicianship
not sure if Gary mixed it but the mix is top class
imo this is a song for musicians to admire but having said that i
think the complexity is too much for the general listener
sometimes as you well know less is more
looking forward to your next song

Nothing to do witht he post - how did you get your final Wav file to be only 31.6 mb?

I just gave this one a listen, and as usual with your tunes, it sounds great. It's got great feel, and I enjoyed the way you did the changes between sections.

Well done, Mark!

Hello guys , Thanks for the further comments and suggestions. I think I'm real close to surrendering this one.
@dobro , the mix that's up now .. I backed off on the drums but reinforced the kick. Thanks , I think it sounds better.
@David W. Pontius , Thanx for the suggestion and options and I Totally agree. I do have AD drums 2 but couldn't get anything going with them. I'm not much of a keys player but I think I'll take a close look at addictive keys.
@RFR , I Really appreciate that comment but , it's the reactions and suggestions that help bring my songs to a better level. I appreciate it. 😊
@subvibe , Thanks for the mixing comment ! I'm Always inspired by your mixes. I always do my own mixing but , I actually sent Gary the final mix this morning to see what magic he can come up with for a master.
@Papanate , I uploaded the new mix that is up now this morning. I think it was just a little over 62MB. If you downloaded the file it was probably MP3.
@TalismanRich , Thank You Sir. I appreciate the listen and comment.
May be a new master coming before long . I won't bump it up , I'll just edit the OP. Thanks .. ms

Tune 2 on Wednesday night's hit chart HR. You'll have me putting on the Steely Dan next. Or the Allmans. Or JJ Cale. Piano up a dB, I'm begging you understand.
