i take a dive into mp3 mixing to listen to some music....i sort of comment on the mix because thats whats expected but i really want to comment on the song and the structure .ect
why cant we have a ...this is my original track ..please tear it apart or praise me section....
because the fact is that its obvious that a lot of guys want more than just the mix ...they want a whole critique..worts and all..
maybe they should have one thread for all the covers guys..
and another for all the aspiring artists and songwriters.

There is a songwriting forum. That's where I post stuff to get advice on songwriting/arrangement. If I want mixing advice.....I post in the MP3 mixing clinic.

The mp3 clinic is a boiling pot for all kinds of input on songs...whether they be covers or originals. Rarely does anyone receive only mixing critic. I don't think anyone here really cares either. We just listen and go with the flow. I don't see any harm done, whatsoever.
The Songwriting forum is great for structure...and lyrical content...but how do you really critic a song, before it is just that...a song...and it ain't a song, till the music plays....so herein, is the perfect forum to benefit from all aspects....even lyrical content and structure.

I just read the first page because I found the initial idea ridiculous. Thus, if I rip off anyone else's ideas on pages 2 or 3, I do apologize.
I submit that practicing recording covers is actually a valuable exercise, especially when learning the craft of recording. Much like copying a painting in art class, you get to see what skills and tools are necessary to achieve the same results as the original.
Deconstruction. You know what the notes are and how to play them. You know the lyrics and all the beats. Now it's time to commit them to tape (so to speak). Suddenly you start to realize that the lead vocal in the original was compressed ever so slightly. You hear that buried delay that makes the guitar sound so full. You figure out that a slight cut in the low end is what makes the difference between your muddy mix and the original's clarity. In essence, this method allows the budding recording engineer to take apart the original to see what creates it. By doing so, he gains invaluable knowledge that can be applied in the future.
When I was young and stupid, I used to turn my nose up at magazines that provided guitar tab. Tab is for losers who can't just learn it by ear, I'd think. Now I like to seek out the tab, whether I've figured out the notes or not, to see different positions, different fingerings, and give myself more tools for the next piece.
Covers provide us with a nice starting place to create our art. Returning to that art class- the teacher does not just provide students with a blank canvas and ask them to paint whatever they want. Instead, the teacher sets up a bowl of fruit, thus providing parameters around which to apply the art. That's all a cover is, regardless of whether it's a remix, a reimagining, a parody, or a true reproduction.
One final note: This is a recording forum, not a songwriting forum. The song is incidental. We should be focusing on techniques for recording and not on the subject matter.

Talking about young and stupid, brings up a memory I should keep just that...a memory. I remember when I said to an experienced guitar player, who was a friend of mine when he said my guitar was out of tune.... "Tune...? Why do I need to tune it?!!"
That was like 30 years ago and the specific wording was surely different, but you get the idea..

Flash: Playing & recording covers is an art as well as a craft!
IMO all this talk about stealing songs and lack of creativity is just bunk.
It's called playing a tribute, and it's loaded end-to-end with creativity thru the entire process. I like the process of figuring out the parts and arrangement. Yes, in stripped recording formats such as 4- and 8-track this requires a bit of simplification of both,... being another artistic twist in the game, but the biggest challenge in songs I choose to cover would typically be hitting the high notes, (ref: David Bowie; Paul McCartney).
All I "produce" are covers, and it's quite a serious artistic pursuit. Almost anything I've done of an "original" nature would best be described as jams, not songs. I'm not a songwriter, nor do I pretend to be one. I do see a lot of so-called original songwriters in angst about the concept of covers as "ripoffs". Somehow, by us paying tribute to great artists and songs, these "original" guys feel globally like they're getting ripped off in the process. The sad truth is that the typical upstart homegrown "original" music is not something that people in general would want to cover. To make the analogy that I've "ripped off" a McCartney song is equivalent to someone also "stealing" your songs someday,... is weak at best and an idea that's loaded with egotism, IMO.
I don't listen to "original" music on this site, unless it's someone I know online and really-really respect their work, but that's few and far between. I focus on covers pertaining to this site and most of the recording activities I'm involved in. There's nothing wrong with it, and it's no less of an artistic pursuit than someone writing and performing his own stuff. IMO, Low level upstart songwriters should just get over themselves.
I've posted nothing but covers to this site. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful! I've posted appx 200 covers online as tribute style experimental home recording. There's no ripoff there. Some people don't like it, so they don't have to listen. I have a small community of fans and well wishers who appreciate my stuff, & that's enough for me. There's talent on showcase in all of it, whether you like it or not. There's much to be learned about the sound of the many different formats I've recorded onto, but mainly it's for fun & should be enjoyed for it's pure entertainment value and listening pleasure.
Who cares about the concept that Hendrix and Lennon & a host of others were classic talents that can never truly be equalled. Just because we're not them, or I'm not David Bowie, does it automatically mean we suck.
I agree that the original thrust of this post is mired in both egotism and self doubt.
I tried staying out of this thread, but was sucked in anyway. I've stated my case & said my peace.

Wow you were just asking to get flamed. Sometimes its better to think things in your head. I udnerstand what you mean man I cant stand all these washed up musicians in cover bands ok I get it its fun to play music but at age 40-45 you kinda just look stupid. Anyway recording covers is fun and you should bea llowed to record your favorite songs if you choose to do.

One of my dear old friends (blues dude) has this song in his pocket he pulls out every once in a while when they get one of those 'Play some SRV' or 'Stairway To Freebird..' calls. 
It's a great story/theme about respect, original music, doing things well, and sticking to what you do, etc.

At what stage does one get beyong aspiration to become an artist?
Does this mean that all of those poor folk who created milestones in popular music history performing & recording songs that have been previously performed are still at the subaspirational level?
How about we blend metaphysics and philosophy to determine, purely for the creation of subgenres and forum sections mind, the functional definition of artists as applied to someone who runimates online?

Right on rayc! I was born with music in my soul and I'm gonna die with it there too. If one gives up their aspiration of being an artist...just...because...they are over 40...then...they really don't have the heart or drive of a true artist to begin with....no matter how old you get, you NEVER stop loving the music...it's part of you.

Everything I know about songwriting came from learning how to play/cover other peoples work. I dont record other's work because a) I'd ruin it and b) I've fork all time to record so when I do have the time, it'll be something I wrote that ultimately gets deleted.
But I must say - Someone posted a cover of I am The Walrus a couple weeks back.... That impressed me more than anything else I've listened to off here. It was forking savage to my ears and truely put me in my place recording wise.
Greg L laughing at abortions with no class and white strats mate with the sixties strat were sickening, in a good way, too. But nailing a classic like that guy and his mate did shocked me.
I like "Disarm". If it doesn't sound good with acc guit and vocals though, I wouldn't bother.
