Distorted guitar mids

Alright, if anyone's interested ... I think the first song on the list "Blue Chair Monday" at least comes close to what I'd consider a decent guitar tone that I had a hand in. It wound up being a compromize. The guy got 1/2 his tone, and 1/2 mine, and it came out alright, I thought ...

Chess,

Sounds pretty good. Also checked out the other two samples. Was kinda expecting a cover of Sabbath's "Hole in the Sky", but alas, no.

But one question - Is there really a band named "Neve"? If so, I'm starting one called "SSL" and we're having a showdown:)

I've been looking to trade one of the heads for a 50 watt jcm 800 to get the best of both worlds.

I have a JCM800 combo amp, and that thing is really cool. It has a certain brashness to it ... kind of a "rude" tone with sort of a barky attitude. The interplay between the master volume and gain gives a lot of variation, and allows you to use the el34's without having to blow the ceiling off.

I don't know if "clean" would be one of it's stronger suits, though. :D The EL-84 amps like the jcm2000 really shine in that department -- basically anything from chimey/clean to bluesy or classic rock.

Your track reminded me of the guitar tone of the Helmet album Meantime.

Now that you mention it ... you're right. Good observation.

As I said in my last post, my guitars are nothing to talk about.
Your guitar tone sounds very weak compared to what Im looking for in my recordings. If your happy with your guitar sound then thats good, but Im looking to achieve something alot more pro sounding.

Examples would be Deftones, Tool, A Perfect Circle ("Pet", from the album "Thirteenth step")

Listen to any of those then listen to your guitar, you will instantly hear the amount of power these examples have in their guitar.

Cheers,
Eck

Listening to PET now. There's more bass guitar than there is guitar. See to me, that is not powerful. It's smooth but but it's not what I would call an upfront POWERFUL/CRUNCHY guitar sound. It sounds more like yours. Too much gain which produces a very compressed sound. There's no attack.

Hey Eck,

You ever mess around with a Peavey 5150?

Based on the tones you seem to like, my experience with that amp is that it gets you in that general neighborhood (Deftones) ... if that's your thing.

I suppose we are looking for different tones altogether.

I mastered your song to show the potential of your recordings.

I am no recording engineer by any means, (merely just a mixing and mastering engineer)
Your guitars are alot better than anything Ive done before. But I think they could be mixed better to accentuate your good recordings.

Never really liked Peacy guitar or bass amps, but Ive only used the older models.
Deftones guitarist uses Marshall amps and 1960 cabs. Saying that ti doesn't mean he recorded with those I suppose.

i have a deep deep hatred for all things peavey.. to me you can't get any more junk then peavey (by junk i mean the actual sound quality not how it's build nessisarily).. I'd play a fuckin behr amp before i'd play a peavey (yes even the 5150 i just HATE it that much ) I can't explain why i dislike it soo much.. not like a peavey amp killed my family in their sleep or anything but still ewww

well.. saying i'd choose behringer over peavey might be a *little* extreme but you get my point.. not that there's anything wrong with people that like it .. just not for me i guess

Well eeb,

Normally, I'd recommend a Diezel.

But I thought that might be somewhat out of his budget for the time-being ... althought I could be wrong - ya never know. :D

Never heard of Diezel before.
They pretty expensive then?
We have a budget from the label, but we would rather spend that on mics, cables, mic stands etc.

Adam Jones (Tool) uses one for all his live shows and about half his recordings. Pretty expensive, but pretty bitchin' tone, too.

From Wikipedia: "He keeps this amp 'in the freezer' when not in use to help preserve it. "

You mean to tell me your label is going to let you guys self-produce?:eek: Well, as PT Barnum used to say ...

.

i wish we could get on a label and have a budjet to buy more equipment.. would be sweet.. mind you if i had the option(option being money) i'd rather record my own band somewhere else.. less for me to worry about

Need to remember to buy a freezer for the studio from our budget. :)
Yeah the label are all for it. The more money we can save on certain things the better. Ill not be doing it for free though. :) Only thing Im worried about is the guitars. I can get a pretty ematy bass tone, but Ill need to develop the tone to get a bit more presence in the notes.
Iwill have no problem with the kick drum or OHs. The snare and toms I will have to learn how to tune properly, probably by hiring a pro studio engineer for a few hours. No reason not to get good tom and snare recordings then.

Vocals we will probably do in a commercial studio with a good range of mics and pre-amps. Maybe even do a few of the guitar tracks in a pro studio to learn how they get a good tone, and if possible then take that info and record them ourselves.

Its gona be a big stressfull job again (just finished our last album a few months ago) but I'm going full out to get the best sound I can by not rushing any part of the process.

Why not apply for every single grant you can find and you might get one.
We started up our own label and got $2000 for it. :)
We dont need to pay the money back and we also cancelled our record label since we got signed by a proper label.

I just tore a wall out in my studio and made 2 rooms into 1. This is actually the first song I've mixed in there so yeah, it's off. I have to re-adjust my monitors and their position and learn all over again. It will be for the better though.

That is smashed just a little harder than I would do. Although the genere calls for it.

it would be amazing to get some grants like that.. but i think we'll shop our demo around a bit.. start playing heavily all over.. if we can get someone to even help with some tour support i'd be more than happy

Probably heavily-modified as well, I would imagine.

that's something that a lot of guys don't seem to understand. it doesn't matter what model amp your favorite guitar player uses. chances are that it's been modded in some way. the mods could have subtle effects or very radical. that marshall xxxx could actually be closer to a mesa xxxx after all the mods are in. same goes for guitars, pickups, speaker cabs, pedals, etc. i see guys here trying every amp under the sun to get "that sound" without ever even talking to a reputable amp tech. also, when you stop chasing some other guy's sound and start honing in on your own, you'll be that much closer to getting "that sound". does that make sense? even if you had your favorite guitar player's rig in front of you, you are still you and will sound like you, hopefully! you can be one of those freaks that obsesses about getting some other guy's sound and hell, you might even get 95% of the way there after you figure out his gear, learn his licks, and play his songs. so what? i've already heard the real deal so why in hell would i want to hear you mimic the same? at some point you have to take a turn and find your own way.

here's a little hint for you dragon chasers: there's a really good chance that your sound isn't sitting on the floor of guitar center just waiting for you to come by and pick it up. tone isn't a get rich quick scheme. translation: tone is something you work on just like how you have to work on your technique, phrasing, etc. it's part of your identity as a guitar player. i'll shut up now and let you guys get back to your ear training.
