do i really need an expensive guitar

I got lots of guitars. I think of them as "colors". Two things here. I have a few custom shop guitars and most of the other ones ain't cheap. Just because I like em. With that said most of the guitars I lean on for gigging and recording are at the mid point. My number one is an old Schecter PT Custom. I wouldn't gig my LP Custom Shop because the fucking thing won't stay in tune. Once you got the basic color in your head, the guitar of choice is "Stick Of Wood with humbuckers or single coils or P-90s or...........

I think how it sounds in a mix is more important
IMO, generally speaking, how it sounds in a mix depends on context and factors out of the players control. Live? Studio? DI? Mic? Both?
A good engineer can indeed make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
If your gigging, you can take a 300$ Epi LP, drop in a pair of SD P90s for 150$, a 300$ amp and sound like Peter Green.
That don't make you Peter Green.
But a good FOH sound man cane make you sound like him.

I guess it depends on what your price point for ‘expensive’ is? These are under $2k, and sound better than any new guitar under $6k.

To answer the original question, no, you don't need an expensive guitar. In general, you'll have a better chance of finding a better sounding and playing guitar if you spend more but there are loads of great affordable guitars if you have the patience to research and play a bunch. And like others said, spending a lot does not automatically guarantee great tone and feel.

Humblebrag.
My girl is a 1948 BV with a Trek percussion outboard. Leslie is a late 60s 122R.
I've had her 24 years. Other than oil, I've only had to replace the run motor about 3 years ago.
Maybe I'll get around to replacing the tubes someday :)
More humblebrag. I only have the one Hammond, but everything else in the pictures is mine. (Sorry you can't see the drums!)

You think you have enough guitarists? Maybe you need one more. :D

These guys are the best! We cover 3 generations and about 7 decades.
Jake (playing the Tele) is 19. CJ (the drummer) is in mid 30s. Gregg (black Strat) is 40 something. Jimmy (the BIG GUY) is in his early 60s, Bart (guitar) is in his late 60s. And me (organ), I'm 71.
This is the most fun I've ever had playing music. There is not a time that we play that someone doesn't learn something from someone else.
