Many thanks to those that critiqued my audio snippets and web site a couple weeks ago. The most common complaint was that the clips where too short.
I have posted a full length clip of 'Round and 'Round You on the website now.
If you have time, please give it a listen and let me know what you think of the songwriting and production. Please also let me know what you think of my singing. I'm a little self-concious about it, and would like some feedback.
Also explore the updated site and let me know wether you like it better or not.
Thanks a lot,
Aaron Cheney

Aaron, the mix sounds really good to me.Your playing and singing actually inspires me to put some of my mixes up on the board. This song brings to mind Dweezil Zappa's early stuff, which I really like.
I dug the website.Checked out the spot for"The Loop"as well. That was my favorite rock station growing up in Chicago.Makes me wish I was back there now.
Great sounds. The singing is nothing to be ashamed of at all.I can only hope to sound that good.

Great stuff Aaron! Sounds like top of the line recordings to me. Your vocals are fine. Really like the attention to detail(s) in the mix.(Reminds me of someone else I'm familiar with...Smartapple)One thing I missed from the website are the pictures on the Orbit page (album covers?)I do have one question about the recordings though...I noticed that your an accomplished session guitarist...were these songs "home recording" projects or "pro studio" recordings?(Yeah....it sounds that good on my little pc here so I just had to ask...)

really enjoyed hearing the long version....great sound...yer voice is great too......excellent mix, so, uh, like MAC2, was this done in a pro environment?....gibs

Thanks guys!

Thanks for listening to my stuff! I really appreciate it when somebody takes the time.
Straight to the point now: All the stuff on the site was recorded in my bedroom with the exception of the radio jingles, which were done in a studio. THat's part of the reason I removed the jingles. I wanted the site to really only focus on my music and songwriting abilities and nothing else. So now, everything that is posted on the site was done in my bedroom (or bathroom).
Here's my recording gear: Cakewalk ProSuite, Echo Darla, NanoSynth, Mackie 1202VLZ, SM57, AKG C3000B, and Yamaha MSP5 monitors.

Also thanks for checking out rest of the site! Just so you know, Orbit Audio and Graphic Design is what I call my little setup. Whenever I work on a project, I like it to be credited as "THis song was produced in Orbit," or "this website was created in Orbit." Kind of silly, I know. You can go to "The Talk" page and there is a link to the orbit page, which is under construction at this point. If only I had more time....
THank you again!

Aaron, really well-crafted pop-rock song, professional guitar, nice feel to it, great home-mixing job. I think that we all feel self-conscious about our voices, especially since they sound differently recorded than they do through our heads. I think that you have a good voice and a good vocal style, and you could improve a little in your sustain and power -- breathing and projection issues, I think (in hearing these suggestions, don't forget that you are at a very high level already, vocals included).

Thanks Slim,
I've been working on my placement and diction a lot. It's hard to practice proper diction in a rock song without sounding like Geoffe Tate or some other classically trained singer. The tough thing is striking a balance between singing propperly and sounding cool and unique; at least for me.
Thanks for listening.

until I read what equipment you used I thought that the bass and the drums came right out of a pro studio.

Good mixing job too.

did you use some kind of compression on the drums and bass?

peace

nice Aaron!

That's outstanding work coming out of a bedroom! LOL I especially like the guitar work...very smooth balanced sound with the vocals...well done.

As a fellow vocalist I know exactly what you mean about being a bit self-concious...It's a bit easier to "hide" behind most rock instruments (NO offense to instrumentalists :))...when it's vocals - you are OUT there. Your voice is very good and as Slim said - adding a little more oomph wouldn't hurt.

It sounds like you don't want to sound classically trained but have you ever tried the open throat technique while singing?? (Steve Perry, James LaBrie) It will work wonders for your projection. To keep from sounding "classical" you do need to modify it somewhat however.

Great stuff...keep it up man!!

Thanks CyanJaguar. In response to your question, yes, they have the crap compressed out of them! Once on the individual tracks, and again on the final mix. I have really been trying to come to grips w/ compression for a long time. It's ironic that the two most important sound tools (compression and EQ) are the also the most difficult to understand and manipulate!
Zip, you just named one of my all time favorite singers: Steve Perry. Can you elaborate on the "open throat" thing a little? My wife is also always telling me I need to open up when I sing. I still have some practicing to do I guess...
Thanks for your input!

Aaron...

I'll eMail you. For not "understanding" compression and EQ you did a fine job.
