Man it seems like you had all the right gear for this.
I'd just have to say that it seems like everything seemed kind of squished in the middle like you didn't pan anything until the 2:40 mark (where it made me want to go out and buy a bulova watch)

Let me just say, thanks for everyone's input (good and bad). I am learning a lot.
I was reading over the posts and was wondering, do you think it is more the recording procedures? Or the mix? I know its both! But which one am I struggling with more?
That would help me out a lot. (figure out which forums to read first).

I'll try to answer that one. I find the best mixing style IS tracking. I mean I don't spend too much time on EQ and junk like that when the artist, me, is sitting right here. I'd rather get it right to tape or whatever and mix a great session into magic rather than a shitty session to almost listenable.
So tracking is definitely way more important at this point.
The Recording Techniques forum is a big help as is the newbie forum.

ok. i'll list.
1. clean guitars are way too loud. i'd take out the ska part, it really takes away from the song i think.
2. dirty sounds aren't too bad. i'd say maybe put the mic closer to the speakers, it just sounds washy.
3. vocals. bring everything else down a bit and let them shine up front. the band works for the singer, and hes fighting for his spot in this mix. they need more "life", i'd say different mic, i use the steinberg mastering edition compressor to add some life to my vox if they need it. it has a preset called "vocals" that with some heavy tweaking can work really well to bring some dead sounds to life.
4. the synths are very overpowering.
5. a couple tempo issues, maybe have the drummer play to a click. hes very solid, just fluctatuates a bit in spots.
6. it almost seems a bit overproduced. i think this song would shine better with a more raw recording.
7. it sounds like you have a lot of 'verb on the drums, i'd lessen it and give them more attack.
i do like this style of music to an extent, but i think this song was just approached wrong. it could be great, just needs some fine-tuning.
as far as your singer taking voice lessons, hes already a cut above the clueless, i wouldn't worry too much about that. i'd say he might want to vary his melodies a bit more if anything, his performance isn't that bad.
guitars - tight playing,just bad sounds. a mark iv is a nice amp, i wouldn't worry about your gear.
overall, it sounds liek you're having fun, and thats all that matters.

vocals WAAAAAAY too loud....i heard the first version and it was heading in the right in the right direction...the lead vocal sounds like its being pumped through a loudspeaker outside walmart.!!
the song is cool enough play what you want ...the lyrics are actually pretty good .......i hear .."*cough....autotune..cough*...
lol....i like the newer guitar part in the intro tho..
man if you were really cool...like im sure you are you might ask someone in here to maybe help you ...like if you were to send your tracks over and have them mix it for you....lots of guys dont mind doing that for guys just starting out...

Well, the song is a bit formulaic, but it's upbeat and fun. Sometimes that's all that matters, man.
I disagree with the people who think you should dump the Ska sections. I think they provide a needed counterpoint to what could be a very repetitive piece without it. However, this genre (both the punk/pop and the ska) are all about meter and groove. Unfortunately, the drummer is not quite up to the meter changes, some of them sound very much accidental. The Ska stuff sits too upright in it's groove. And one other point; if it needs the Ska gimmick to be compositionally interesting, perhaps the main section needs some rethink? Just a thought...
I'm not gonna pick on production, you're well aware of the shortcomings. But, I do think the piece has potential.

Anyone want me to send them our tracks?!! I know most people are busy doing the the songs they actually get paid to do!.. but help a new guy out.
How would I send them using nuendo? I guess export each one to a 32 bit wav floating file right?
Oh yeah, we went to this guy who also has nuendo and he just brought over a USB 2.0 drive and his computer. Transfered the files and he had all kinds of cool plugins. That's the autotune that you are hearing. Also my backing vocals sound retarded. They actual sound really funny by themselves but not so much with the lead vocals. I have to do them again, I sound like a moron. BUT the good news is that I just ordered RME ADI-8 Pro so that should help with the recording quality. I am going to wait until I get that to re-record.
