G'day

I am in the market for a pair of monitor speakers. I have been recommended the Yamaha MSP5s as a good set of basic monitor speakers.

My budget is around US$750 (AUS$1500)

Any opinions on which monitors to get, or which ones to avoid?

They do need to be powered, as they will be run through my Digi 001. Around 60 watts is the max power I will need.

Any advice would be very nice.

Cheers,

Mr. K

I use them. After spending a couple hours at Mars listening to a few other brand models, I opted for the MSP5's because I thought they were the most accurate in my price range. In fact, they were a few hundred below my price range, but sounded better than the others.

It's hard for to really give them a thumbs up or down because they're the only monitors I've ever used. The first few mixes I did sounded like shit, but I lowered my head and kept plugging away, figuring that it would take time to get to know even the most reknowned monitors.

The MSP5's don't accurately represent the low end, which I knew when I made the purchase, so you have to play some guessing games when mixing. The bass and other lower end signals will be more pronounced on other speakers when the mix is done. After some time learning that curve, there aren't too many other surprises. The mids and highs are accurate, if not a little exagerrated.

Overall, I would say that you can definitely get good mixes with them, but if you don't mind waiting a while until you can get something better, you might be happier in the long run. Either way, make sure you go someplace where you can test drive them before buying. I was surprised by how much I disliked some of the more expensive ones.

good luck...

I will investigate more...the thing is that my local audio supplier supplies limited stock, such as the yamaha msp5s, so therefore I get promotion for those speakers...hmm...

Are there any good cheap online places to shop for monitors?
