mixmkr - you didn't check out my last tune, so I know how you feel..

Khompewtur - Jagged Little Pill is one of my favorite albums too!

Lt. Bob. - I have a Pioneer turntable and about 100 albums.. Most of which are in mint condition.. I also collect picture discs.. 95% of my picture discs have never touched a needle.. I'm putting some of them into picture frames and hanging them on the walls.. Trying to go for a Hard Rock Cafe type feel.. It seems a lot of them didn't go up in value like I thought, but I still like them.. I have some really rare ones..

and you made a quick visit to my last one and said you'd be back, .....but forgot I guess.... nah, nah, nah, nah...:p

watch it buddy...you're abusing the Christmas card list.

and...btw...your last sucker is on my desktop. I just haven't commented yet... the moody one with the ebow... see...I listened. Infact, I'm stylizing a tune in your fashion too....DUDE!!!

Harris...blow the money... why die with a bank account, eh?

Dude, have you been talking to my wife?

I don't know how to describe it, and it honestly is the first time that I've thought the mp3 encoding made a difference on anything I've mucked up, but when I'm listening to a bunch of my tunes running through this, they all sound a ton better... Maybe I'm not using the L1 correctly, but that stuff just seems to add (or bring out) a gritty harshness that plagues me, and this box doesn't. For all the time I've jacked around with mixes with EQ and everything else, adding dither noise and dsp crap...then to have a pretty dramatic GOOD change happen with so little effort...yeah, I'd pay $1,000 for that. I don't spend much on me, really...okay, now I'm just rationalizing...

So, does it sound best coming right out of the unit? Right before your A/D converters chop it to pieces? I'd bet the combo of sending it back through the A/D into your computer, then mp3ing it degrades things a lot. I'd also bet, you're gonna need something like:

original Wav -> High Quality D/A -> $1000 magic box -> High Quality A/D -> better sounding wave -> no more digital processing -> high quality dithering -> high bit rate mp3 -> the file we all hear

before we'll understand what you're hearing.

so straddle that thing with some nice D/A and A/D converters and we can all share in the joy.......but don't tell your wife!

btw, i'm making all that up. you should definitely consult with someone who knows wtf they are talking about although it sounds like you've already decided so just buy the damn thing and forget about it!

Actually, the A/D and D/A converters are one of the most critical elements of the chain although I rarely see them discussed around here.
I mean, think about it, the sound that you end up hearing....is actually the sound that the D/A generates in response to the computer code it receives.
And don't kid yourself, each and every one has it's own sonic signature.....they don't simply produce a picture-perfect representation of what was originally recorded and A/D'ed into 'puter language.
Although we don't seem to talk about this subject much, I'm also a bit of an audiophile, Stereophile and Absolute Sound magazines and such ( hence the vinyl and the $1500 turntable :)) and I've read about D/A s that did such a poor job of conversion that they would go off pitch in certain frequency ranges!!!

Now if they can vary enough to actually generate the wrong pitch....then clearly they can affect the freq response or clarity or harshness or whatever.

BTW......the reason I put a thread like this which is not a song thread (although Chris fixed that for me by putting one in, thanks! ;) ) in the clinic, is 'cause this is where my peeps hang out and I think of it as sort of a slow chat room for us clinic-dwellers. :)

Yep, I hear ya Bob i think the same way sometimes. You gotta watch out for them cybersquatters ;) The voxchat thing was funny we should start it up later when Sluice does the matchups for HRC4. That way we can get maximum comedic effect on the odd pairings and begin raggin on whomever with no delay.

p.s. - i need to look into a good soundcard with a MIDI module built in. My soundcard doesn't have and it's become a limitation. What has both MIDI and good A/D conversion?

Hey Sabbath, yeah i really dug just about every track on that. One of the few albums of those years i'd listen end to end. I really thought the Glen Ballard and 'Lanny team was a really good collaboration.

Did you see my latest thread? It's not asking for feedback on a song (please don't put one there chris!) but it was links to my first posts two years ago. My first thread and I'm demanding praise for my work. You were the only other person beside "theron" to listen. Your site on mp3 is still working, were those the ones you posted at the time?

I didn't ignore you..... :)

Well since we're kinda on the subject of ad/da converters, and nobody seems like theyre about to get shitty over trouncing a thread w/ ever-changing subject matter.......:D .......I need a good recomendation.

Im getting a computer rig together and need a good interface. Ive been looking at the motu 828 and the aard. q10. In terms of SOUND QUALITY...... is there a difference that i should be concerned about? .....Ive done the research, so please dont tell me to do a search..............

Im looking for personal input/experience....... from folks i trust.

thanks much........

...Chris-buy the box!!..... more is always better:D

yeah, i second what Guern says.

I have an aard but it doesn't have an onboard synth and I wanna try some midi stuff. It sucks having to use two soundcards for that. I hear good stuff about Digi and Motu, anyone have any prefs?

This thread sucks.......... I say we delete it.

:p

Guernica--Speaking of soundcards and converters, I have a first generation MOTU 2408, which has done a good job for me. I'm happy. Never had a problem with mine. I suppose the Apogee stuff is better, but its expensive and I don't know how much better. The 2408 has 8 analog ins and outs, SP/DIF in and out and ADAT in and outs via optical. That has been nice since I own an ADAT. For a quick live remote, I'll take an ADAT and a mixer to record. Then, when I come home, I can hook the ADAT up to my 2408 and dump the audio into the computer for mixing and editing. Cool, but just if you have an ADAT.

The version II and beyond 2408's have balanced 1/4" ins and outs, which the V 1 doesnt have. I think the newest version can do 24/96 too, which I can't do. Mine will only give me 20 bits, so I just use 16 and say screw it for now.

I've thought about a laptop and an 828 for location stuff or just recording wherever I want. It would be sweet! NO fan noise either! In short, I think the MOTU stuff is very good and good bang for the buck too.

No i only one-starred Chris's thread. That's it.

With him hijacking this thread and taking down all the other ones that had negative comments in it, it just got to me. That or him bumping his own thread for the 8th time while 5 new ones go without responses.
