Just bumping this thread because I can't imagine a "Worst Singer EVER" thread that doesn't pay tribute to one of my favorites, Don Vliet.

When you listen to tunes like Ice Rose or Harry Irene or A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond you don't immediately get the impression that he's all that bad.

Two of those songs are instrumentals.

Classic campfire favorites include:

Tropical Hot Dog Night
Sheriff of Hong Kong
Bat Chain Puller
Sue Egypt
Willie the Pimp

And many more.

I'm sure all of you have made very valid points.

Is Celine Dion a better vocalist than Don Vliet? The only way I can answer that is to say that I'd gladly listen to Captain Beefheart, and I often do, and it's never made me vomit once. But he's an absolutely horrible singer. Auto Tune would self-destruct. And rightly so. He's so bad he's fantastic. I can't say that about Celine Dion.

In Don's case, that's a big part of the appeal of his music. He turned bad vocals into an art form. Bob Dylan's got nothing on this guy. Don should receive two or three awards a year for Worst Vocalist Ever.

Just my weirdass lizard-thing opinion, of course.

anyone who thinks bob dylan is a "terrible" singer hasn't heard nashville skyline. it doesn't sound like "bob dylan." the "bob dylan" you are all familiar with is a character created by bob dylan. the fact remains that you might not like that character's voice, but that voice is striking, unmistakable and forces you to listen to what is being said. i believe it was a calculated move. think of how many assholes with guitars were playing folk songs back then...bob dylan just had something special to say, and he needed a way to get people to listen.

That may be so, but it doesn't change the fact that to me it sounds like nails on a blackboard.

There is a difference between "the big picture" and "technical ability".

Celion Dion is technically a great singer.

To me, she is the worst singer ever.

Bob Dylan is a singer, one of the best ever.

Thank You!!! A BIG second on the Celine Dion "worst ever" vote. She's got to be the most styleless singer ever. That's a perfect example of when all the technique in the world will get you nowhere.

However, I must admit that, while I think he's obviously one of the greatest songwriters ever, and that I do genuinely enjoy his vocals on some things, I usually always prefer when someone covers Dylan songs.

I can't believe people said hoobastank. Granted he can't get as high live but he is still got some skills. Granted they usually throw some delay and reverb on his voice during sets but he is still a good singer.

I would definitely say the vocalist from bleeding through. Granted they don't sing too often but when they do it is god awful.

i'm going to have to say that for vocal style it's eddie vedder. man, i hate that guy's voice. for actual vocal "ability" it'd have to be the singer from the red hot chili peppers; have you ever heard them live? holy crap, he sounds awful.. they must work miracles in the studio or allot many a month to just vocal tracking.

Her awfulness is kind of overrated. I wouldn't actually consider her worse than Jessica, Brittney Spears, or the Backstreet Boys. She just looks worse because she was caught "lip synching" on SNL. I don't think that she actually was. It just happened that her backing track was redundant with her vocals. She was just singing the same thing as the machine.

lotta good mentions here.. but alot depends on what your perspective is.

The original posted asked about the one singer who blew the worse LIVE in reference to their recorded version.
Which means that most of the mentions don't really make the cut since they can produce as well live. EVEN Billy Corgan can nail "His sound" AND the right notes live.

I have to agree with the previous comment. Anytime I have seen them doing a live performance, there were definite pitch issues.

I hate to keep egging the pudding, but I saw Tim Burges, formerly of the Charlatans on Jonathan Ross last night(it was a repeat). Man does he suck. No power; no tone... nothing... just a nasal whine.

I don't know. From what I've heard of Corgan live, he tends to wreck his voice pretty hardcore. He can perform decently on his more melodic songs, but when he tries to sing the heavier ones, it all collapses into gravel.

Well I've seen him 4 different times and although everyone makes mistakes, he does a good job IMO.

I think Corgan is something of an acquired taste. I wasn't too keen whenI first heard him, but he definitely grows on you. Adore is one of my favourite albums. Some good crooning on there.
