windows won't recognize USB device MR8

Hi, Hoping someone can help! I'm trying to connect my new MR-8 to my PC for the first time. Operating system is Windows XP, and the USB cable I'm employing functions with other devices. I have the MR-8 in the USB Mode and have followed all directions in the manual.
Upon connecting the USB cable to the MR-8, I am receiving the following message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognize it. Try reconnecting (which I did) and if Windows still does not recognize it (which it didn't), replace the device."
Anybody else had this problem? Can anyone offer any advice?
Any thought/ideas are greatly appreciated!

I am clueless but I'll take a stab at it anyhow, are you using the fostex .wav file manager?

I've always used a card reader because originally I had Win98,
You can pick them up at (short)circuit city for $20...

This is all new to me.

I'm really just trying to get a system worked out for backing up my tracks. What I really need is a step-by-step guide for interfacing the MR-8 with my PC. I want to save whole tracks for future use, not just mixes (which I can do on my CD burner).

At this point I don't quite understand the relationship
between the USB method, the card reader, and/or the wavmanager. WHICH ONE WILL SERVE MY PUPOSES BEST? DO I HAVE TO COMBINE THESE SOMEHOW? My head is kind of swimming right now.

I've worked with a Tascam cassette deck for 20 years, and gee it's easy to just pop the tape in and out of the deck at will. The storage issue is a major problem for me, because I will often be working on up to ten songs at any given time. So, the MR-8 is probably not the best machine for me. It is simply the only one I could afford right now.

Any tips and suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. THANKS!

have you tried to restart the computer while it is already hooked up, somethimes helps

if you cant get it to work a card reader will help, then you can just open the card up like another drive and copy the files to your hard drive,

wavemanager is most usefull for putting files from the pc back to the mr 8. though it will also take them from the card to the pc, its not really needed, like i said they will copy over fine.

i dont think it matters but you might want to try and download the latest firmware for the mr 8 from fostex, i know it mostly allows you to read bigger aftermarket cards, but it might solve you connectivity problems as well

I will try the re-start method...that tends to work in a lot of cases.
I think I might just get a card reader cuz that sounds alot easier...
not as easy as my cassette recorder though. I'm determined to make this work. The storage issue is what's really complicated for me.

I really appreciate the help. I'm kind of a lo-tech/lo-fi type, but it's definitely time for me to expand my horizons!!

I also got a cheapo card reader for win98, then one pc i got win2000 going and usb is still sticky on that one, it's very old pentium 133, but works. I don't want to keep moving the CF card in and out of the unit and the reader, so now i just leave it in and use usb. then over the network, i copy the song files and then archive them to cdr and delete em from both pcs. i don't need wavemanager for this, but i have it.
 
I much prefer the USB route as nothing has to be removed from the MR8 for file transfer. All stays on during the entire process.

I use XP without problems in this area. I have a long standard USB cable that goes from MR8 to PC. It stays connected all the time.

As soon as I put the MR8 in USB mode, the PC beeps a distinctive sound when it senses the MR8 coming online in USB mode. I then use Wave Manager to move files back and fourth.

It sounds like there is a problem on either the MR8 or PC end. If you have a second PC, or access to a friends PC, take the unit there and see if the USB connection works. IF it does not, then your MR8 may have a problem. If it does, the problem is probably in the USB drivers on your XP system.

got it to work!

I finally had success transferring tracks to PC from MR-8 via USB cable, and back to MR-8 using wavmanager. Yipee! I think I followed the same procedure each time, so I'm not sure what the fix was. Third time is the charm , I guess. So...once I have the wav files saved to my PC, I can put them on a CD-R for future use? That would solve my storage problems, and alllow me to go back and work on songs at a future date. Would that work??
