let's see, acoustic guitar in xy: I'll take the earthworks or schoeps over the 84 or the 184 any day. Drum overheads: again schoeps or earthworks. Snare? schoeps. snare wires: schoeps or earthworks. shall I continue? 184 sounds completely different. If you don't know that then you've never worked with both mics so why bother commenting on how great they are? 184 on sax? try a u67 or a royer 121 sometime.

HA HA! You are quite laughable sweetnub. Some of the greatest engineers (far greater than you I'd bet) of the past and present use(d) 84's religiously - and for good reason - they're fantastic mics. If you don't like them, then you're more than welcome to say so, but don't give me the "I know it all cause I'm the gear god" attitude. Thanks Mr Knowitall.

Hmm? Why do you think they suck? Aren't they very smilar to the KM84 which is "a pretty decent mic"? Could you explain what you mean? I use a 184 for my tenor sax recordings and I think that mic rocks, compared to many other mics in that price range.

The KM-184 is very "hard" sounding in comparison the KM-84. The "84" has a 'sweetness' to it that the 'hyped top end' of the KM-184 can not achieve... this is due in no small part to the amplifier design of the 184 which is built to be 'cost effective' in manufacturing as opposed the the amplifer in the KM-84 which was built to sound good.

should I say I told you so? hmmmmm . . . . . . .I told you so. The 184 is "crisp" in a bad way. "harsh" would be another word. Grainy too. I'm talking in comparison to the 84 and other mics I listed. I don't dislike the '84 but I've found the newer crop of small diaphragm condensers outperform them. Again the problem is if you haven't heard a well functioning 84 you might not know if you have a bad one, i.e. years of moisture, dust, smoke, etc. Seriously the earthworks mic is only a few more hundred then a 84 or even a new 184 (given neumann's new pricings) and is a sweet mic. Flat as a 4th grad brownie troop. Open and natural sounding. Although it is not "sweet" (to quote feltcher) like the '84. No problem for me, hooking it up to my universal audio 2-610 takes care of the "sweetness" Indeed my nubs are sweet.
