Will a gun blast rupture a mic

Sure, if you need a ruptured mic just aim right through the capsule. (Enter drumrole.)

It's not about where you point the mic, it's about where you point the gun. And I can tell you that that 30-06 is a peashooter compared to the 6-pounder I *really* have recorded, or even my 4 gauge flintlock elephant gun. I can't even imagine the blast from the 44 pounders the HMS Victory carried. The worst of course, is in the enclosed space of an ironclad. Even with earplugs, the guns aboard the Merrimac ruptured crewmen's eardrums in its battle with the Monitor. Now *those* are he-man spl's.-Richie

I would love to hear one of those. I was in Iraq several times and heard 105mm artillery all the time, and that was pretty impressive. I think the most impressive sound I ever heard was 12 tons of home made fertilizer blowing up in a dump truck...it shattered light bulb more than 2km away and bent sheet metal more than 1000 meters away!

I wouldn't take a mic near any of those!

I have no idea how the spl's of modern artillery compares to the old stuff. It would be interesting to compare. Now, I have no doubt that a modern 105 exceeds any 19th century (or earlier) field piece in range and power, but I have no idea how that relates to noise and spl's. I'll bet the inside of a tiger tank wasn't a real quiet place, either. It may have made more *noise* than an M1A1 Abrams. And of course, the cannons I have recorded were firing blanks. I bet a 6lb. iron ball ramps up the noise considerably (not to mention the damage).-Richie

Found this to be a bit interesting from Rode microphones ..........

So I guess that answers that ..... note they were using the Rode RØDE NT4 stereo microphone and the RØDE NTG-3 shotgun microphone. ;)

This is wicked cool too!

The future of sound and recording.

SAW 249 fires 5.56mm rounds which aren't the loudest, especially outdoors. The gun looks a lot more impressive than it sounds. But it is fun to shoot and blows stuff up pretty well!

I think what I've learned from this thread is never to take a decent mic anywhere near a fire arm! In most other countries this isn't a problem since their guns were taken away years ago.

Ya what are the gun laws in OZ?

Microphone laws at that?

I know politics belongs in the cave or whatever, but since it was asked here...I know OZ and most of Europe was disarmed years ago and it is very hard to own handguns in most countries. Interestingly, murder rates and violent crime rates have increased in most countries that have taken away guns. Gun laws don't stop criminals, and just turn law abiding citizens into criminals if they want to defend themselves. I live in California where we are steps away from becoming communists, and the state would love nothing more than to take all of our guns, as it is we already have some pretty strict and senseless laws.

Gun laws to me are like brick wall limiters in mastering to others on this board.

OK thanks Aaron. They were using automatic weapons in the video that was shot in OZ that is why I asked.

Now what about microphone control laws in California? :D

I'm sure there are some mic control laws on the books that I am breaking but I'm not sure what they are. Actually with the way I record, there should be laws against it!

I hope they don't take away our guns. I had to use one the other day. And that rabbit wont be chewing the wires on my car anymore... And hopefully the mexican eagle will prefer that food source over the neighbors chickens. He certainly seemed to like the rabbit buffet I left for him. But in all likelihood the neighbor will shoot the eagle. Now that they have a better clue of where their chickens have been traveling too. Plus this is Texas now, not mexico. And I don't think the eagle has a green card.
