I have to laugh at all the people that say there is no way to get a good tone from micing a bass rig and that you must use di all the time. For those people try this...

Get a vintage Kustom bass rig with the two twelves. Mic one spkr with your choice of kick drum mics and mic the second spkr with a 57 mix to taste and enjoy!

People also say that a large blue rectangle is what a properly mastered song should sound like... and that its okay that aerosmith performed with Britney. People say a lot of things. I for one, LOVE micing a bass rig. I highly recommend the old cad e100 for this lowly task, positioned like you would for a guitar cab, and a nuemann 184 about 4-5 feet away, low to the ground. But there are many nice ways of micing bass rigs... you just have to account for the fact that bass waves are huge... (as a matter of fact you can't really fit them on an LP which is why phono jacks play with the bass to compensate) so when you're placing your mics, you want to have room (the neuman in my setup) to let the wav cycle once before hitting the diaphram of your mic.

Who exactly are those people? I am personally more skilled at mixing DI bass, but everythign I've ever learned about recording and every studio I've been in indicates that micing a bass cab is a perfectly workable method as well.

For even more fun with bass, mic the unamplified strings of the bass and mix back in with either your DI signal or your cab mic. A nice twang-y mess....and sometimes you need that. :)

I have never heard anyone suggest you cannot get a good sound by micing a bass rig, just that DI is an easier, more sure fire way to do it.

All things being equal, I like getting the cab and the DI.

I like your idea about adding the 57. I play a 15 + 4x10 and am going to try out your suggestion (in addition to the DI)
