Why I won't buy the Tascam 2488

OK, so, what's wrong with playback? That's supposed to be the best part.
Remember this if you remember anything in tracking; Every take is a "performance". If you're using virtual tracks then, every track is a "performance". Amen.

You gotta get off on the "performance" or, none of what you're doing is going to be challenging. If it's not challenging, to me, it's not worth shit!.....?eh?

And, It doesn't matter where you are in the home recording food chain, engineer, 2nd engineer, writer, composer, guitar player, producer, without the challenge, you're pissing up a rope. :D

personal taste maybe...

but i can't deal with shtty recordings(playback) much.
my ears hurt literally..i got fhkd up
ears, they really annoy me with sht recordings....too sensitive.
need to go to the ear doc and have a cleaning and test done.

so yeah,agree the Groove/performance maybe #1...
but the sound/recording=playback is #1.5 priority IMO.

the challenge of it, yeah, if one can't enjoy the challenge
go watch TV and veggitate your life away!...

what I'm saying is "playback" is the final result and
in relate to my self-challenge, is the most painful.

I "enjoy" Tracking the most....but mixing is painful..but I'm learning!!

my wife says I'M VERY CHALLENGING!!!! :)

What's a TV?_____ Learning can be painfull._____Yor wife's not wasting her time.Need to get over this "playback" problem, not liking what you hear, etc...It's OK. You've decribed it perfectly. If you don't mind me saying, you sound a little frustrated.
Sounds like you're developing hyper-critical listening skills. This could be a good thing but can also drive you to taking pills or #@^!*%+^#!@

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

2488 continued.....
TRACKING is still 100% Enjoyment...its been
the fhkng greatest thing.

been trying out my SM7 recently with the 2488.
SM7 doesn't have the close proximity effect, kind of
a shitty/room-rejection mic was why i picked it up.
and it is very good at it...

SM7 & JM was unplanned in my upgrade,
but the 1VCQ actually recommended
a dynamic to quiten up the unit "even more"..
optimum results.
and it did with the SM7, nice little surprise.
2488 Preamp is turned all the way off.
Noticeable decrease in the idle sssshhhhh from my LDC's.

2488- TRACKING has been nothing but 100% Enjoyment.
2488- MIXING...getting better, but no cigars yet.
but now I'm back to the mixing skills and no cost$$ stuff! :)

Yep. I do. Alot! Often! Too much even. Thats' why I can recognize it in someone else. For me, It's time to take a break from the project when things aren't going just the way I, (we) want them to. Even with the beauty of the 2488. When I, (we) return, the whole project is viewed with a new perspective. These breaks can last anywhere from 1/2 hr. to a whole month! Still, we know when it's time. They've had to literally "PRY" me away from the board for just this reason. Only after (a break) do I realize that my "judgement" would be compromised had I been allowed to remain sitting at the faders.

Mixing vs. tracking? Most all my real creative stuff comes down well before the final mixes. It's sad to have to dump stuff that I thought where keepers in front, down at the end when those tracks are sitting there wanting to be used. But, this is where good judgement comes in and all those virtual tracks where there to give us more options in the final mixes. Stressful? Yep. Painfull? Yep. Frustrating? Yep sometimes. Can I think of anything I'd rather be doing? Hell no.

What are you trying to bang out on the 2488? And where do you want to take your material, songs, etc.? Give me an example of your stuff without comparing it to any other artists. Or send me a CD.

2) i'm not even at virual tracks yet, the concept is ok but it's
like menu hell!! editing and patching ....
i like tracking and reading on mixing skills very weak. but i'm reading.

* pre-production??? i like this idea, get a mental visual and jot on paper,
a concept in your mind.......
this sounds like a good basic foundation??
(unless your doing a avante-garde creative jam to see what evolves).

Well Cool,

Sometimes it's easier to think of your tracks as paint, brushes, etc. with the concept of [texture, contrast and space in mind]. Obvously, the more tracks you use, the harder it is to keep your voices and instruments from masking.

However, I'm still learning to be economical with my instruments and tracks. That is, because I'm the drummer, bass player, keyboardist, guitar player, strings and horn arrangers and palyers, all these cats gotta be nice to eachother and be patient with one another. They'll all get their opportunity to perform when the time comes.

They all want to be heard clearly and distictly from eachother. Even each one of the sax players in the "band". (this can be a challenge)

IMO, tweaking the EQ and trying different FX as I go, often helps me to give distiction to the players. Using the stereo field alone is not enough. I have to think "presents" and, "distance" to help with these distictions. I also needed to learn how "frequencies" and "levels" have to cooperate.

I'm the boss. It's my band. My orchestra. These wonderful folks respect me because I know. And I love and respect them all dearly. These "cats" of-course exist within my imagination. That said, I'll always prefer to play with my live musician brothers and sisters. :D
 
Dave's MF-P01 update!

It arrived with Saturday's mail, but the postman just left it on my front porch, on the chair that's out in front, without knocking or letting me know he'd left it. It wouldn't have been too hard, as the front door was wide open, and I was just inside on the 'puter.

Anyway, the MF-P01 was packed in a standard USPS mailer-box, and inside was packaged in a standard USPS envelope, with no packing, no bubble wrap, or anything of the sort. The MF-P01 pretty much flopped around in the box, freely.

After having unboxed it, and cleaned it up a bit,... (it was dirty),... and applying my own power supply,... (p/s not included),... the MF-P01 worked great! Although I just plugged a guitar and headphones in, for line-in monitoring and did NOT record anything, all transport functions seem to work, and at this time I declared the MF-P01 100% fully functional! My wife even said it was "cute".

My 2nd son asked me, "Dad, why do you keep getting these things?" I said, "You mean tape recorders? I love tape recorders, they're my life! Some day you kids will get all my tape recorders!" That answer was apparently good enough for him!

So, the MF-P01 isn't a 2488, but for $46/delivered, it's declared a "success". BTW, the plexiglass tape cover was intact.

Now,... to record something! That's always the hard part! Buying stuff is easy!

Thank the good lord above, the plastic tape cover is intact and we finally have something to record our music on! Halaloulia! You don't find deals like this every day. That was very rude of that postman. :D

Well, it's not quite that dramatic in my case, but it's good to get great deals on gear that arrives intact and functional! It was rude of the postman, though,... you're right about that.;)

Did you know that the TASCAM 124_AV is a HALFTRACK cassette deck?
Halftrack cassette! It does L/R Sync overdubbing, too! One of a kind, I'd say! $15! Sweet!!!!

The 124_AV probably cost upward of $600, when new! Maybe more! :eek:

I mean, I can't beat the mint-Fostex 260 -in-road-case for $25, but I'm still happy with what I got!

And the price is great. Does that unit only run at 1 7/8 or will it do 3 also?

Yea I got lucky on that fostex with the case. It seems like sunday is the day to catch a deal on gear.
What gets me about the Fostex is the guy that sold it shipped it before I even sent him the money by paypal.
