If the 2488 is TRULY as buggy as everyone is saying, it really is a shame. Tascam has always been the LEADER of home level recording technology. Hearing people say things like Tascam Sucks is so sad, as historically it is completely untrue. Maybe they rushed the unit to market to stay ahead af the pack?

I happen to share this opinion.

In the 80's, with their revolutionary and well built Analog designs, YES but beginning in the 90's and into now, TASCAM is just a "me too" company with relatively cheap offerings. TASCAM in 2005 is nothing but a shadow of its former self.

increasing the volume?
So the mic was hearing the normal- bedroom studio ssshhhhh noise,
but the volume started to increase, louder and louder and louder..."

Sounds like a gateing/comp. and some kind of "pumping" issue.? Did you have other 2488 internal dynamics signaled at the same time? They won't cancel eachother out. They'll just keep "dancing" with eachother. (nasty). The JOE MEEK, is it tube process? (Very powerfull) You said "used" JOE MEEK? I read somewhere that the 2488 won't tollerate defective gear, something about the converters, not too clear on this either.

Just a few questions off the top...

acrylic vs. oils

~Daniel ;)[/QUOTE]

Very intuitive analogy Daniel. You paint too?

To dispose of analogue recording would be like asking artists not to use oil paints any more because modern acrylic paints are now available." - Sound on Sound, May 1997

2488 and the guest that wouldn't leave

REEL, you been very tolerable...you can tell me to fhk off anytime!
heehe

The paint...many don't like the paint job on the 2488. wears off.
(Dis the 2488 post... required) :)

Joe MEEK
yeah B, I'll go ask around.
Defective??? hmm. I'll give it another shot, but can't deal
with adding noises...ain't gonna deal with that. add noise to the
new unit...oh no,no can do. a gate would fix it...but fhk that mo $$$.

the more i read the less i knew?
it's getting paraylizing. Started Feb.
I'm thinking now...
I need to just Track as clean and dry and flat
as possible and remove everything possible
from the chain??!!! Especially EQ and stuff!!
Learn how to Track better, keep it a simple chain going in.
You know others are probably right, maybe my sound problem
is my technique and not the unit?
don't like my Acoustic strummin/Vocal track
they get in the way of each other.

I usually like Track 1 to be a rythm and vocal.
Acoustic or Electric guitar. Everything builds ontop of that.

My chain:
a Studio B1 microphone.
a Joe Meek Channel strip (with front jacks!)-Testdrive
2488/ CDRW
Monitoring:Tascam PA150 Amp+B&W 303's Tracking and some
Paradigm 3se's for A/B & listening.

any SOund Advice? harhahrhahrhhharaarhhar

2488 and anything else.

love the input, it fits.

Another bright side, of the "keep it simple chain" tracking method,
would be I still wouldn't have to use MENUS!!
No menus was the big plus for the Channel Strip.

REEL, I finally got NowhereRadio going at your site.
I was surprised with the Ramones stuff....my kids and friends
are digging them alot, I liked them because they brought home
the "back to garage band, non-overblown music industry fake sht..."

my fav was Love Me Do..so far, you had fun on that one.
the harmonica was classic touch for us oldknobs...double vocal good too.

Aah, yes,... thank you guys so much!

No doubt, the Ramones rocked, any way you slice it. They were a very underrated and much unappreciated band, but I love'em! They're one of my favorites, for sure!

Love Me Do is a real toe tapper, isn't it? Good music like that will never die. That harmonica was just the icing on the cake!

My recordings have been called many things, but "overproduced" was never one of them!! ;)

Thanx again!! Come back any time!! ;)

2488 weekend -

2488- weekend work :)
playing around, still no problemo's....my 30days came and went.
so 2488 is here for some time. I think my ol' MD8 was around 5-6yrs?
can't remember.

weekend work:
1) make a long cable from pc to stereo...for Nowhere Radio stuff!!
cable is cheaper than another set of speakers.
2) tryin out a acoustic guitar/ small condensor mic + large C mic/ Vox
991 + SP B1. got a 990/991 combo $89. really only wanted the 991 SMC.
3) Joe Meek CH strip testdrive...will make a decision. love the sound, love the ergonomics...but possible noise issue and possible "Simple is Better"
been reading, reading on Tracking..clean signal chain.......see #2)??

my newbie ebay has been kickin.
Upgrade 2488+B&W303/PA150=~ $1400

sold DMP3/RNC$225
sold MD8$375
sold RAM monitors $122
sold Guitar to Guitar Center for $600 (only paid $531!!ssshhh)
Only spent $78 new-cash
Ebay was totally unexpected when i started this

Straight, plain & simple.

IF I ever had that "what the heck" $1100 impulse purchase, I'd be "okay" with the 2488, thanx to COOLCAT, PB_Studge & others, who've injected reason into my manic complex.

BUT, for the time being, I'm perfectly happy using and trying to fully exploit:

BTW,... you guys can have my analog gear,...

damn.......thats alot of equipment..i had to bump it again....fhkng a REEL??

So how many tracks is that all together?? :)

I never totalled it up.

I've also never set it all up simultaneously,... eh,... not enough room! I'd need a whole other house, or better yet,... an airplane hangar! Yeah, that's the ticket!

Of what I do have hooked up,... the scheme and patchwork of which changes periodically,... I remember about 3 years ago, I had e'thing patched so that I could drive EVERY TRACK CHANNEL AND METER to 0vu with ONE INPUT,... either a guitar or mic! MAN! THAT WAS A FEELING OF POWER!!! Unfortunately, the bulk of those machines will not sync to each other, bit it was awesome, just the same!

Did you see my pics?

2488 and hmmm???

i could only get one pic to come up?
...hell i finally got NWR on and all these fhkng "players",
it's like you can't have 2 of 'em or its all fhkd up...each time you switch
a player seems it fhks the other software up???
anyway. damn lot of tools REEL.
i heard your idea of the practice/recording hall.
theres places around here, i went to one, it was a old 1920's brick building,
apartment...fhknd hundreds of rooms. 1st floor of 3 was aminly a Radio station, studio....probably a cash cow.

2488- been recording twice today.
Joe Meek is nice.
I like the fhkng thing, but can see the term "colored" applys here on the Meek...but I love it's color.
***The noise issue was me and my settings.

Came across a "new weak link" is the SPB1 from todays tests.
I'll probably get a SPC1, can't go wrong. I'll sell the SPB1 easliy.
The Tascam Pre-Amp is nice, and again if one wanted to delve into menus, compresion and EQ can be had and is probably quite good.

The only thing I'd like to try other than the Meek is a Tubes,
PRe+Comp (ART PRO VLA+ MPA or something?)....good cheap stuff.

Most pro's, etc are recommending staying away from EQ during tracking.
but I think compression is common during tracking,
i think the 2488 pre's are good compared to the Joe Meek, and my old DMp3...
I didn't hear any big difference. I think the 2488 pre's HOLD UP WELL.

I had a blast tonight and got several tracks down, etc... yeah,
it's a successful Upgrade, REEL you were very, very friendly and helpful in your own way.....thanks, this thread gave me a landing-place to summary
this unit.

This thing Tracks possibly easier than any unit I've ever had!!!

2488 NEGATIVE-
???What can I put on the 2488 top prevent the sht from peeling??
BMWerks...you around, you said your unit was peeling??? i've heard of this on a few posts.

But Reel dont you know this problem with the Click will be fixed in software version 1.3.50 Or is it software version 1.3.60 ;) If it is still supported by tascam next month. But they wont have that problem with the tascam modle 2498 cause its going to have a whole new software version that will do everything. Heck it will even cook breakfast! Maybe with out a click.

I want someone to cook me breakfast, someone without a dick.

2488 - Vox and Acoustic

Had a good little weekend with some one to one comparisons.
Material: 1 verse of a Vocal and Acoustic only song.
TEST GOALS:
Question: does the adding a small condensor improve?
Question: Is the Channel strip improving and justifying the $$$?

RESULTS:
Voting was done by "blindfolded listeners" hearing this "partial song snipet" over and over....
each set was called out as #1, #2, or #3.
The "consumer listener" would say which they preferred to hear, or sounded best.
I would mix up the order also, #1,#2,#3... would change.
#1 SPB1 only, would be changed to #3 or #2...random listening orders.

Recording: Vox and Acoustic ( ALL FLAT/DRY except for Joe Meek#3)
#1 Track1) SPB1 Only
#2 T2&T3) SPB1 + 991
#3 T4&T5) SPB1>Joe Meek Channel Strip + 991

Listener results:
First pass voting- Joe Meek was voted BEST of group. Unanimous.
But the addition of the MXL 991 got the judges votes KEEPER (Oh yeah!!! thats better!!!leave that there whatever it is!" responses)
+ Joe Meek is a positive addition to the 2488.
+ Also the small condensor, MXL991, helped considerably.
(for ~$45 the MXL 991 is here to stay.)

******************************************************
Partitions: TEST 2
Question: lets see what the 2488 internals can do?

TEST KNOB: 2488 internals added (comp, Eq) vs the Joe Meek VC1Q strip.
I sweetened the best I could to get the same sound, and it was closer.
Apples to Apples somewhat using EQ + Compression only.

TEST 2
#1 Track1) SPB1 Only > Internal 2488 EQ+Compressed
#2 T2&T3) SPB1> 2488EQ/Comp + 991 ( scd/acoustic comp/flat ok)
#3 T4&T5) SPB1>Joe Meek Channel Strip + Track5=MXL991 (flat/dry)

Again I replayed the snipet tune several times. Muting ON/OFF and the listeners would respond if they liked #1,#2, or #3.

Results:
Again, Meek had the best blindfold results.
same results nearly unquestioned, however
instead of a 100% unanimous results,
the 2488 with eq/comp actually got a couple votes. 2 of 8 plays.

Again unanimous,100%, the added small condensor was an improvement.

In the End:
1) I was actually hoping the used Joe Meek VC1Q would fail, so I could return it for $400+ and buy a whoooping $$$Microphone.
unfortunately, I will have to go work some overtime to keep it!!
I did have it setup nicely (pat on the back to self) :)
Joe Meek Notes:
- It has a horrible manual.
- its easy to fhkng lose your SWEET SPOT.daaang.
- I spent several hours on it today, and it can make horrible noises such as distorion with output too high, SSSSHHHHHHSSS noise if comp is setup another way.
but when its there its there, and I can understand why people love their Joe Meeks when you "get it".

2) The Gang here mentioned the small dia condensor in addition to my SPB1,
i picked up a MXL991 becuase it was cheap, and so am I. Actually the 990/991 combo at $89.

My Non-professional advice,
I did notice positives to the 2488 Compressor, it has the
faster attack, limit or knee it's nice more like my old RNC i sold.
The Meek won hands down, I can't argue this as I was there.

Required 2488 SLAM::: :)
RECORDING MAGAZINE- Feb 2005
Tascam 2488
Negatives mentioned must hold the Rewind+Stop to RTZero.

Just got back in town Cool, bin on a vacation of sorts. Yea, a few months ago I had an engineer/producer friend of mine sit at the 2488. I didn't notice until he left but there were paint chips missing of the lower left (dark grey) edge of the unit. He was mixing some stuff with his watch on. Or, maybe it was the acid from his sweaty, oily palm and wrist that disolved the paint.

I had this happen to the paint on my Panasonoc SV 3800 on one spot near the shuttle wheel where my fingers always rested doing searches. I guess it's not uncommon. But this is where the paint actually wore off. Not chipped.

Sounds like you're having some fun on your 2488! Hope things are going smoothly.

Peter

REEL and the Guests that just wouldn't leave

alright...vacation.

yeah, been really great. gang turned me on to this small mic
for acoustic and it was WOW!!!(and easy!)
...can't wait to share with my brother.
He was just asking..my acoustic sounds like ASS.

2488 the paint thing, i need to figure out how to "seal it" better....thats
bllsht...they'd be better off just leaving the plastic natural..better than
painting plastic that peels?
I'll seal mine or something before it's peeling time.

Been laying down tracks, playing witht the Joe Meek...reading, reading..
cleaner is better Tracking, as you said, pretty unaimous really. :)

NO Eq, very slight compression....leave it to the mixing guy...who should leave it to the Mastering guy....heheheeee

alot to learn..but it's fantastic.

.

I told'ya, this is your thread now!

I think I've said all I can say on the subject,... and more! ;)

Riff on, my bruthas! ;)

/DA

PS: Painted plastic is just downright cheesey!

They should have injected the mold with colored plastic of the correct tone, and then called it a day! Painted plastic is not a good solution. I don't know of any other painted plastic products or parts from Tascam. The results are obvious.

Sometimes I wonder where Tascam's head is at. ;)
