I'd have to go with Page, but only because he's still alive. If the question was 'Who was better, I'd go with Hendrix. Hendrix had the British guitarists in awe when he hit Britain.
Umm no, as someone who was just on the tail end of his time here and yes I was very young , he was sadly seen as a bit of a side show. Yes we were very wrong. The British guys didn't "get" Hendrix til way later, after they realised who Clapton had got it from and that wasn't Hendrix either.I'd have to go with Page, but only because he's still alive. Many of these "guitar gods" actually aren't that good as players (as proven by the fact that I can play some of their stuff).
Another meaningless "who's best" IMO. What difference does it make? What standards do you use? Is one "better" because he sold more records, or had more teenage imitators, or did more drugs, or wrote more songs, or died younger?
Get a life.
There is no problem, or solution. The question is redundant.lol
please try to be a part of the solution ; NOT a part of the problem
try that on for size....
Have a nice day !

Just to say again. They all have something to offer and they are all fantastic. The joy with music is there is still more to come..better, worse? Or just different.
I don't think either of them were/are that great as far as being technical players. As mentioned above they were both super sloppy, especially Page. I was actually having this same conversation with someone the other day. Many of these "guitar gods" actually aren't that good as players (as proven by the fact that I can play some of their stuff). What makes them great in my mind is their song writing, playing style, and the legacy they have created. Most lead guitar players (at least in rock music) are still just copying these old guys and adding little in comparison.
When somebody is out of time and it sounds bad - that's sloppy.
When somebody is out of time and it sounds good - that's genius.
Yeh but at the time Clapton was outselling Hendrix at shows and on record. Most British guitarists were still riding the Swinging London thing. Sure they understood Hendrix but his trio at the time didn't even consist of the first choice musicians who choose to stick with the bands and work they had, despite the band being mainly British. Not quite true. Ever seen the movie 'A Film About Jimi Hendrix?' Clapton and Townshend are interviewed and talk about how blown away they were by Jimi, and how threatened they felt. Page and Beck weren't in the interview, though.
I chose Hendrix.
I've seen vids where he was not zonked out of his mind and he was very clean and not sloppy at all. But, I'm pissed at the motherf*****r for being such a dipsh*t and killing himself for a ***-damned buzz. That moron deprived us of what could have been an amazing catalog of music.
But, without a doubt Stevie Ray was the best. It's a scientific fact. I saw it on the "Planet Guitar" mini-series on Discovery last year. That dude was uber-ugly on Discovery-HDTV though.![]()
And not for the speed-blues he played, just the whole package.
