Which mic ???

Ok, I want to make my own home studio, but by pieces. Once i finish getting everything i need i want to start recording. What should i start with? I'm thinking a mic and a good pre so that way i can atleast put down some vocals while i am waiting for the rest of my supplies to be ordered. What mic and pre should i start out with if i am trying to record rap & Hip Hop???

Yo Indo! Insufficient data, dude. First, on what budget? I could recommend a Neumann U87 and a Martech pre, but the heart attack from the sticker shock might kill you. Second, to plug into what? Any kind of recording rig/mixer/interface/digital recorder has *some* kind of preamps. It's a waste of money to buy a standalone pre unless you can afford to buy a better one than you already have, and you have to have a place to plug it in where you can bypass whatever pres you have in the recording rig.-Richie

Ok, lol yes insufficient data! I don't have a very high budget but i am working on getting a mic thats between $200 and $400. I'm going to buy these products piece by piece. I don't need my mixtapes sounding perfect, just good enough to sell! I'm running an ACER computer 64-bit OP, so i know i cant run Pro Tools M Box, i would have to use either Cubase or Nuendo. So what mic and interface along with a good pre would i need?
