Which electric guitar??

All great suggestions. I'm going to go play that godin with the P90's in it again. If I like it the 2nd time as much as the first, it might have to be my guitar. Might as well form my own sound rather than copy what I've heard. I also have a lead on a deal for a used godin LG P90 in like new condition for $325. Maybe that's the Lord telling me to buy one.

Speaking of the edge - I've got their Elevation Tour Live in Boston DVD, and he plays just about every style of guitar you can think of. Every song he's got a different guitar in his hands. Two things I noticed: He played a tele for "Sunday, Bloody Sunday", and, though I think the song is awesome, I thought it was his worst guitar tone of the night, just my opinion. I think his best tones came from a white Custom Les Paul, his Gibson Explorer, and his strat on "where the have no name". I don't remember him playing anything with P90's, but he very well could have - and I did notice a few hollow bodies. A lot of his tone is accredited to his wall of AC30's behind him and a sea of effects. It's just a really cool DVD especially to listen to some cool guitar stuff - not to mention an awesome show.

hey, someone mentioned a fender nashville tele....it's got an extra single coil....i've got one and i love it, very versatile and plays well....maybe you should check it out

I stand corrected. Damned if I know where I saw that axe. At least currently, it appears they make the tele either with 2 or 3 single coils, 2 humbuckers, or a humbucker on the neck and a single coil on the bridge. I think I would prefer it the other way around. I pretty much use a standard tele, a Les Paul with 57 classic humbuckers, and a Casino with P90's. From one of those three, I can get any sound I want. I'm thinking the axe I saw must have been a custom piece. It had standard tele pickups with a humbucker in the middle, a five way switch, and a piezo on the bridge.-Richie

Now THAT would be a cool and extremely versatile guitar. What couldn't that do?

mjareo, that Ibanez looks pretty dang cool. Thanks for the plug - I'll have to find one and play it. The red one definately looks cooler, at least to my eyes.
I first played it at a couple of local shops, then I ended up looking at some reviews online.

Here's one of them:

Review 1

but for the life of me, I can't find the other one I really liked. Guy compared the JTK2 to the JTK1 and reviewed them both. It was a well done article.

Oh well, If I find it, I'll add it to this post.

OK, so I took an extended lunch break to Guitar Center today. Found my favorite sales-guy (we really have some good guys at our GC here in Oklahoma City) and asked if he had the PRS SE Soapbar II. He said no, but hooked me up with an Epiphone Les Paul '56 Goldtop RI (it's got P90's) and some ultra expensive marshall stack and off I went in the isolation room. I played the epi and a gibson les paul special with 'buckers back to back, and the P90's were my favorite instantly. I could get great thick humbucker type sounds and nice jangly single-coil sounds pretty easily. Clean it sounded great, and with overdrive it was nice and creamy, or nice and edgy - depending on the pick-up. The gibson was nice, but the P90's just sounded way cooler to me. Its all a matter of taste, and I think my taste lies with the P90 pickups. Maybe I should just find a used epi goldtop.

I played the PRS SE EG that's set up like a strat (which had an AWESOME strat-esque tone, by the way), and it fit my body much better. I liked the neck better, too. I'm guessing the body/neck/playability will be similar on the PRS EG and the Soapbar II, which would make it a big contender for me. I think it may be down to the Soapbar II and the Godin LG SP90.

They didn't have the ibanez :-(

Anyway, I'm going to play the godin on my way back from work today - hopefully I can crank it up a bit.

I'm not the biggest PRS fan to begin with, but to me the SE's aren't anything like the real thing, but, if you like it, go for it. I really wanted to like the SE Santana model, but I couldn't stand it. Go figure. Anyway, have fun!

Well,

I played the godin today after work, and it just didn't do it for me, especially after playing the epi at noon. I totally understand what people are talking about when they say that the pu's in the godin aren't like most other P90's. The godin felt a lot more mellow, maybe a bit "nicer". It was a nice tone, but the tone of that epiphone LP 56 goldtop was more what I'm looking for.

Too bad I'm not really looking for a les paul-style guitar really. I like them, but something a bit lighter with a more comfortable body shape would be great - which brings us back to the PRS SE models. Again, Guitar Center didn't have the soapbar, but the SE EG I played just felt awesome. I liked the neck on it better than the les paul and the godin - though I think a tele neck might be my favorite - the PRS is a very very close 2nd.

The question is, are the soapbar pu's in the PRS SE soapbar II going to sound similar to the ones I heard in the epi LP 56 goldtop RI? If so, I'm all over that sunburst PRS.

Well,

I just sent payment for a PRS SE Soapbar II ($330 shipped - like new condition). I played the PRS SE EG again yesterday and it just felt perfect. Great feel, great neck, and a really nice acoustic ring.

Congrats

Make sure to post back and let us know how the SE P-90s compare to the Epi. Have fun. :)

I will. I should have it by the end of next week some time. I just might go in to guitar center and A/B it with the epi I played. I was playing through some $3000-ish marshall stack, which probably had a lot to do with the killer tone I was hearing.

Try the tele and fit a humbucker in the bridge position and a strat single in neck position................and move the stock neck pickup to the middle and add a 5 way selector................you would be surprised with all the sounds you get with this setup.
