I need to get some active studio monitors and I need to know what's the "Best Buy" under $500 a pair, long discount...as well as where the best deals are for them.

I particularly need advice from folks who have used a variety of them enough to really get a feel for the differences. I asked this question elsewhere and all I got was about six different answers from six different people who'd only tried the specific monitors they bought. That's not much help.

The intended use is for producing instrumental and vocal music in my home studio. Nothing fancy or complicated. The monitors will be run from my SeaSound.

If there are any really awful active monitors out there (and I'm sure there are), please warn me about them, as I might jump for the wrong pair if the price is attractive and I don't know any better.

Thanks for any help.

For a few dollars more...

For about $650 you can be in a set of Tannoy Reveal actives. Crystal clear detail, awesome stereo imaging, plus they really look cool (little blue lights and all). I just picked up a pair to replace my Roland rsm90's and the Tannoy's blow them away.

I think you'll find that as you break the 500 dollar mark, the sound imaging goes up expenentially (i.e. the mackie 824's and the krk v8's, both around $1200/pair).

Hope this helps... Big Bear

I haven't heard the JBL's. In fact the only monitors I've ever really used are the above mentioned Tannoys. I really like them, but plz note that I've NEVER compared them to any other monitor, so I don't recommend you to buy them, just that you take them into consideration.
