As for my favorite solos....

Mark Knopfler: Sultans of Swing

Nuno Bettencourt: Rest In Peace

Gary Rossington: I Know A Little

Jimmy Page: Ten Years Gone

EVH: Eruption

Michael Gurley: Dorina

Martin Barre: Aqualung

Jeff Beck: Freeway Jam

Ian Anderson: Locomotive Breath (flute solo)

Sorry, but solos are like Lays potato chips... you can't have just one.

Definitely "Comfortably Numb"...

The intro and solo's to Gary Moore's "End of the World" or anything from him for that matter...

Numerous solos by Yngwie, Ulrich Roth, Rik Emmit, EVH, ... too many to name actually...:p

Hmmm, lessee:

The last great guitar solo: Vernon Reid, Cult of Personality. Why is everyone in rock music so afraid of atonality? Vernon isn't.

A funny aside: A young friend of mine starting getting into guitar solos (he isn't a musician), so he asked me for some listening suggestions. I listed Cult, Eruption, and Flying High Again. He had never heard any of them, or anything like them. Can you imagine that feeling? Been way too long ago for me to remember.

Best post-guitar hero-era solo: Kurt Cobain, The Man Who Sold the World. I don't think enough has been written about the genius of these few notes, recalling Saint-Saens' Cygnus from Carnival des Animaux. Cobain wasn't a technically brilliant guitarist, but he proves here that's unnecessary.

Funniest guitar solo: OK, maybe there is a Zappa solo which should win here, but my personal favorite is Andy Summers, Mother.

The original and still champion: Danny Cedrone, Rock Around the Clock

Bass solos? I'm a bassist first, but there are no great bass solos. There are some great bass breaks, but anything beyond four bars is silly.

Flea, Aeroplane or even Around the World

Baghiti Khumalo, You Can Call Me Al

"devil take the hindmost" by Allan Holdsworth-unbelievable playing...

Hmm some others..

Anything by David Gilmour-you could sing his solo's like a melody-not many people can do that.

"No Quarter" live version Jimmy Page

"driven to tears"--Atonality---coool-Andy Summers

Adrian Belew plays some fine solos on the talking heads album remain in light

Elliot Easton?? from the cars-he played short concise-technically adept solos-that fit the song.

Alot of Jazz guys--1 I like is Pat Martino-live version of "special door"

Dimeola-is a great soloist-Race with the devil on Spanish Highway off his live record is very cool--"Romantic Warrior" with Return To Forever is a good one too.

Van Halen--sooo many-he soloed in every song-I still listen to Women and Children first occasionally--"Eruption" was ground breaking.

Randy Rhoads-Over the mountain, Flying high again

I once saw Frank Gambale, live with Jean Luc Ponty--some of the most amazing soloing i've ever heard-I hadnt realized what you could do with sweep picking.....

Most anything Jeff Beck will do..For me anyways..
But I gotta say Holdsworths solo on "In the Dead of Night" from UK's first album blew me away! Great stuff! Hell the whole album!
Also Brian Mays solo on "Killer Queen" is great..Hes always had very good taste in his solos
Gotta agree with Elliot Easton!

Great solo indeed! One of my favourites as well.

But I like May best ;)

Mark Knopfler in Brothers In Arms, the one right before the outro. I think it's gotta be my favorite.

What? You never heard Siegel-Schwall's "Hush Hush", obviously. Bass player gets about 3 minutes, and loses his freakin' mind. Truly amazing. They redid it a couple of years ago, I think, but definitely didn't recapture the magic.

George Duke's "Reach For It" has a killer bass solo (might actually be George on the Dukey Stick there, but when we covered it, we gave it to the bassist). And Stanley Clarke gets some great solos in "La Fiesta" and "Spain".

And then there's Jaco...

Three great bass solo's:

Black Sabbath: "Slipping Away"
Metallica: "Orion"
Metallica: "Anasthesia Pulling Teeth"

Cy

Zappa: "Watermelon in Easter Hay"

Jerry Garcia: "Morning Dew" - May 8, 1977 Cornell University  This was enough to get a confirmed Grateful Dead hater to become a deadhead. lol (OK, the pot helped... ;) )

Tons of SRV, Page, Hendrix, Gilmour, etc... :)

A very cool bass solo: Jack Bruce with Frank Zappa on "Apostrophe" from the album of the same name...

Trey Spruance's

On Faith No More's Digging the Grave. Unbeatable. The best solo concept EVER, and I AM NOT KIDDING.

Peace...

PC

David Gilmours solo under "Any Colour you Like" on the Pink Floyd P.U.L.S.E tour... :)

Lots of good one's mentioned.

George Lynch - Dream Warriors.
John Petrucci - Another Day, weird solo in A Change of Seasons.
Storyville - Good day for the Blues
Joe Satriani - Friends
White Snake - Here I go again

Probably one of the littlest known bass dudes out there seemed to be always soloing when playing any given song, and hes definately one of the best. Steve Digiorgio of Death. The first hinting of it came on the album 'Human', and what stood out for me was a very simple bass interlude, maybe 4 bars long on the song 'Cosmic Sea'. 'The Philosopher', on the ITP album is a really awesome tune ending with tradeoff solos between Steve the bassist, and Chuck the guitarist. Definately some good listening, if you favor hearing people excel at their instruments. Gene Hoglan on the drums is no slouch either. It's almost painful trying to imagine attempting any of that shit myself.

I don't know his name, but the guy from Primus is an amazing bass player, and there are some great bass solos in thier stuff. I'm not a REAL big fan, but I do like them when I hear them, and have a few songs in my mp3 files, and respect the fact that the man knows his sh*t.
