Yamaha, Pork Pie, Dunnett, Pearl, Luddy...?

Brass, Steel, Titanium, Maple, Walnut...?

Evans, Aquarian, Remo...?

snare wires? I hear puresound 20 strand wires take the cake here. they're close to $30 a set though!

Thanks, looking forward to some good info.

I reply to this thread at the risk of sounding like a basket case but the snare I like the best is Neil's. I'm not just saying that because I like Neil and I wouldn't say that about anything with Rush or Neil...... but that's my answer and I'm sticking to it! :D

What I like about it is that it's so versatile. It was the Moving Pictures album that stood out every time I thought about good snares. If you listen to Tom Sawyer or Vital Signs, those are good to hear the snare on. It just "cracks" but it has a nice low end as well. I guess it was the old Slingerland that he uses.

My other favorite snare is from Alice in Chains "Dirt". That snare sound kicks my ass! It would actually be as good or better than my first choice from above.

Sadly.... none of my favorite snares are mine.

My favorite snare for recording?

Well, I have a Pearl 8"x14" Free Floating Snare, and I have several shells for it. So it can be Brass, Stainless Steel, or Maple.

Maple records the best.

I also like Ludwig 5"x14" Acrolites...they are cheap Cast aluminum shells, but they kick butt for recording.

I generally like either 5" or 8" deep snares. I hate 6.5" snares, and I can't stand piccolo snares.

Acrolytes!

I have 4 of those drums... I love them!

They rule for recording, and depending upon what skins you put on them, they're even better live.

All of mine are tuned differently, for different applications.

fenix, you really like those big ass holes in your shell? that's one snare drum I always make fun of. I hear they sound good but are waaaay overpriced. I wouldn't know personally but those holes...oh, man!

I don't own my favorite snare drum but of what I do have my favorite is a 5.5x14 brass pearl sensitone with an evans g1 coated batter head cranked to the gills. I love that crack baby!

peace~

They are overpriced on their website. Mine lists for $1010 on the website, but usually if you get them from ocdp dealers they will sell a couple hundred less than what is listed on the website.

this drum is good for fast music which is what I play and does sound phenomenal, however, I would not recommend it for jazz or matchbox 20 type rock.

What About Rogers.....

My fav is the Rogers Dyna-Sonic....I have five of these suckers and love them all....all COB, but one's in brass finish....I also have a Rogers COB Powertone Which I've found to be an incredibly tight sound.....The other I use for recording is a Sleishman 2.5 inch free floater.....CRACK!

Right now it's the Pearl Chad Smith signature drum. Records like a dream. I personally think Puresound snare wires are over- rated (and over-priced). I had a set and ended up selling them with the last snare I sold.

chad's drum sounds good for recordings but is too ringy in my experience. I like it a lot for loud funky stuff though and you can't beat the price! I seriously can't believe how inexpensive it is, especially with his name on it. Lars's piece of crap is well over $500 at most places.

puresound over rated? over priced maybe. you also said DWs are over rated so at this point your opinion of what is over rated is dismissed ;-)

Ok, so perhaps "over rated" is a strong term. I'm simply referring to the mass hysteria that DW's are the "God" of drums. I personally didn't like them. With the reinforcing rings, no matter what heads or tuning I used, I could not get any resonance out of them, only a high-pitched punch. Some probably like that....

For the Puresound's I mostly meant that the price no way justifies the difference they make. However, whatever sounds good to you quite simply....sounds good.
