I was at a drum teacher's house at one time and he had multiple kits/cymbals/etc. He had these old, old, OLD set of hats....I don't think they were Zildjians.....maybe Istanbul or something. But they were absolutley amazing. Sounded better than any newer-ish pairs.

I was just going back through this thread and saw this. New hi-hats never really sound as good as they should because they are, well, ...NEW!

Cymbals always sound better after they age and get played more. This used to be a common practice with Zildjian back in the day. They have a vault and used to let cymbals age for quite a while before they would sell them. Now with the demand being higher, they can't let them sit for too long and they have to ship them. Compare a set of new New Beats to a set that is a few years old and the old ones will show more character.

I've been playing 14" new beats for quite awhile. I have a set from the late 80's/early 90's and they also have aged very well and I usually get compliments from other drummers how they love the sound of them especially when recorded they seem to just fit perfectly in the mix and don't have a harshness to them that other various hats have exhibited when I've tried to record them. I've borrowed quite a few pairs of hats from other drummer buddies of mine, gone to drum stores and played on countless pairs looking to purchase a new set to replace the new beats (to no avail) but always come back home empty-handed to my good ole new beats. I've even rented them out to a few talented drummers for their recording purposes and one of them swears after using them, he's gonna track down a nicely aged set of new beats.

It might be just me but the more I look around for a set to replace them, the more I've grown to appreciate their unique qualities. Everything else sounds either cheap or too quiet including the rest of the zildjian A line to my ears although the only other set of hats I heard in person was a set another drummer had that I liked were zildjian k/z's.

Dang, 15's!? What kinda music do you play? Those 15 inchers are so "deep" and dark!
Rock!

They record great and they cut through everything.

I love these 14" New Beats of mine too. They're from the early 90's, and have also aged well. They sounds so much better than "fresh" hats it's scary!

When I Was a Zildjian player, I liked and played 14" Quickbeats, and I also had a set of 13" K/Z's that were killer. Really crisp and tight sounding.

My drum teacher's 14" late 1960's ZIldjian hats. Nice, dark, and mellow, with a hint of trashiness. Great jazz hats. My current hats (paiste sig sound edge) are too bright for my tastes, so i recently ordered a pair of Dark energy 14"... which was kinda stupid, since I've never tried them, but based on hwat I've heard from the crashes and the rides, I'm sure that they are gonna be worth the $240.

My drummer just got some mastersounds. They took some getting used to but now I really really like them. Not sure if I like them better than my AAX's though.

A buddy of mine with a Sabian endorsement had them make a pair of custom 15" hats for him. They sound pretty badass.

Just got my dark energy 14" hats, they are really nice. More musical than the sig soudn edge, but with a rivaling amount fo projection. Also, the bottom of the dark energy works very well as a top hi hat for teh sound edge.

I played some 14" new beats for a while and loved them, but when they broke, i got some 14" quick beats and i wouldnt trade them for anything. i love their tight crisp sound, and they still sound good open too.

None of the above...........

Zildjian K bottom with a Custom A fast crash top in 15". It took me years to find the combination that I like the best and this is it. Plenty of sizzle and presence.
