I was just going back through this thread and saw this. New hi-hats never really sound as good as they should because they are, well, ...NEW!
Cymbals always sound better after they age and get played more. This used to be a common practice with Zildjian back in the day. They have a vault and used to let cymbals age for quite a while before they would sell them. Now with the demand being higher, they can't let them sit for too long and they have to ship them. Compare a set of new New Beats to a set that is a few years old and the old ones will show more character.
