whats the frequency keneth?

OK now I really need help. Can't get the boom.

I am trying to mic up without EQ on the kick. I am having no luck. I have a few problem thing I see and was hoping for confrmation If possible.

First, our drummer has a kevlar kick head.
Second, He has a rockhard on the head. You know those hard discs that tick on where the beater hits.

It seems like I have a lot of click. I mean a whole lot. I also am having trouble getting much more than a fart tone. no fatness. I have tried tuning up, tuning down, moving the mic, I also removed the front head right off the bat. I am wondering if that was a mistake with the kevlar kick head. The front head was normal with a 4 inch whole in it. Could it be that it was providing a lot of the tone?

I don't know I am stuck. my drummer is not here to OK me to rip his rock hard off. So for now I have placed a thin layer of fabric over it.


Any suggestion??

Oh ya this is the chain.

This is a normal sized slinglang kick drum, maybe a bit shallower than some.

Then Beta 52, cable & snake, Mackie SR-24-4 mixer, Layla 24, PC , and cake walk 9.0.

Do I have a hope of getting a good sound or should I just hit the EQ?
 
That might be one of your problems. For a good result the hole should be off the center.

There are quite a few things you can try, its all a question of trial and error, and if there is one thing I've learned about mic'ing drums is to look at every kit / player combo as a different thing altogether.

First, experiment with the placement of the mic, from inside to outside the hole, from aimed at the center of the hole to the border of the hole.

Experiment with placing dampening materials in the kick, down pillows are great.

If your sound is still to boomy at the lowest frequencies, shelve the lowest.

Place a baffle right behind the mic, or something like a quilt draped over a mic boom
