I have a problem. I bought a Neuman U87 and it sounds aweful on my band's vocals. I cannot return the mic (for health code reasons) so I fired my vocalist.

So, What kind of vocalist is the best one for less than $100 / session/ gig?

Should he sound like Phil Collins? or Ozzy ?

What?

I suggest you contact a certain Ms. Piggy. She is in approximately the situation as you: Very keen on getting world famous, but hasn’t had a lot of exposition recently. Singing is her main interest, and she has a real nice voice, only she was never allowed to use a real U87. The people trying to disguise her real talent recorded her through an TSM M87S through a Behringer preamp.

… and while you are at it, she used to work with a drummer. I believe he was nicknamed “Animal”. Try to hire him too. Best and most dedicated drummer I have ever heard.

Quick! Rehire that vocalist! There was nothing wrong with him. What you need is the American made mic that is THE STANDARD for vocals.

Fortunately, I can help. This is a 3 step process.

1. Rehire the vocalist.

2. Send that piece of eurotrash Noo-man to me, and I will dispose of it properly for you.

3. I will send you a brand spanking new SM58.

PM me, I'm ready to help.

I can't sing very well, but sometimes when I'm taking an apocalyptic crap I emit sounds that are similar to Kip Winger, especially when I'm close-micing my butt with a U87. I only charge 25 bucks per session if you're interested.

I really like the Studio Projects B1 ($99). Some voices sound good with the Shure SM57/58 ($95). Both are under $100. I find I can eq the B1 to sound like a lot of differenct good mikes, but only to a degree. Either could work in a pinch, but neither will sound like a $500 mike taylored to your particular singer. In the end you get what you pay for, but if you can settle for just a little bit less you can get by.

Hope that helps....John
