WHAT'S THE BEST MIC FOR...kidding....

I use and like the MSH mics, too, and for the money, they win hands down. I have one MXL 991, but I haven't used it yet. I don't have the Oktava MK012.

Not to further complicate the thread, but my current favorite for this application is the Shure SM81 - I picked up a couple of them used, without worrying about whether they were a matched pair (Shure says it doesn't matter, because the specs are tight). I use them in a X-Y right above the soundhole.
 
SM81s they look sexy on my research indeed but they are pricey REAL PRICEY over here. If I was to spend that sort of cash I would rather go for neumanns, go the extra mile sort of speak

What kind of pre were you using...I have a couple of them and have chosen them over MK-012s for accoustic guitars and Drum OH's several times....I have never had a problem with noise...

keep talking.....................I use focusrite pres built in to my control 24

a mic pre is something I would love to get, but another time methinks
 
Just went through a mic shoot out on overheads last night. To make it short, for the money ,the AKG 451EBs held their ground fairly well against the KMi84s and the Gefell M300s.

I have both the 603s and the Oktava. I use them side-by-side on two high end guits. Both are very nice on acou guit, and my 603s has no more self noise than the MC012. It is a tad brighter, but they both sound essentially the same to me. Very close. I don't mic drums so cannot comment on that.

If they were about the same price I would choose the MC012 over the 603s because of the versatility of adding caps (and mojo), but the 603s does come in the 604 version with the omni cap added. I would not pay twice as much for the MC012.

For $100, if it sounds as good as the 603s, the 604 is an excellent buy.

I paid $65 for the omni cap for my MC012.
 
I didn't hear a tremendous amount of difference in Travis' camparisons, although my preffered the sound of the 603 on the finger picking (which I do a lot of on occasion)

AKG 451EB huh, I like most AKG products that I've tried. I use a solidtube, D112, C1000s for live use (soon to be replaced), D19c (which I no longer have) & a gooseneck dynamic thang

there does seem to be a fair bit more in price with Oktava approx £300 in the UK where as the stereo set of 603s inc flight case & shockmounts is £170

or one 603 is £65-70
 
£440+ for the AKGs over ere.........the MXL's are starting to win through price

I'm still to look at the beyers and other brands that have been mentioned

Pres I believe were SCA A12's. Used many times with the Josephson C42's in various applications with no trouble. Typically I can crank them up as loud as I want without much worry about noise from the preamp. Although I will admit that my recording room doesn't exactly have the lowest noise floor. Maybe being omni they just pick up that much more of the noise floor? :confused: I dunno, but I am willing to accept that I may be off-base. They did sound pretty darn good as room mics for drums, but the source was much louder of course.

E-bay it man. I got a pair of em used for $500. Now if your look ing at the new reissued B models, I hear they are a little different sounding, no transformer, and a fixed cardioid capsule,... and about $500-$600 a piece.
 
I don't have any problem with noise on my msh mics either, close mic'd or not. They don't have any more self noise than any other mic in their class, but being omnidirectional (msh-1) they pick up everything, including the computer fans, traffic noise, breathing, and any other bodily noises that occur (just like any condenser).

my shoulder gave a tremendous crack once & it was recorded by 2xSE2200a & a KMS105 neumann, best cracking bone I ever heard

was looking at EV re200 (I think that's the sdc) on ebay.................I'm an EV freak BTW, the re1000 looked rather sexy as well

but I havn't seen a uk price for naiant
