What's a good 5 piece drum mic setup?

I know this question probably has a million/zillion answers, but I'm just wondering a few things in particular...

Shure offers two "mic packages" one with a a few 57s, and one with some clip-on (PGDMK4) mic's specifically for toms and the same kick mic... you can get the tom mic package on ebay for around $250, or you can get 3 57s for around 360...

do you think using 57s on toms is better?

or is there an alternative to this Shure "mic kit" approach for 250-350 price range you recommend?

And, what mics do you recommend for overheads, that will give a nice compromise between quality and price?

What are some good mics to use for high-hats?

Basically, what a drum mic setup you recommend that has a balance between price and quality?

This is my first question/post.

Thanks!

I've never been in a situation where i found myself wanting a mic on hi hats. Also, the ES57s make for a very usable tom mic at just about $30 each.

I like my Audix i5 on snare. You'll probably want a purpose built kick mic- prices range from $40 to $250+. There are a few brands making budget sd condensers- try MXL.

I wouldn't bother with any of the "kits" in your price range. I think you can do better by selecting individual mics..

I have the kit you are refering to with the 57's and Beta 52. I love it. The only real down fall to using the 57's on toms is if you mount them on the toms with the supplied clamps. The ends on the 57's like to rattle around when clamped down on a drum (tom more then snare). I just used a little electrical tape and problem solved. I also have another 57 on my snare, and a 57 miking my hi hats/splash. I LOVE the Beta 52 for my kick drum. I place it inside about 3 or 4 inches back from the batter head and slightly off center from my beater. As far as overheads I am currently using 2 SM58 vocal mics, simply because its all I really have right now, but I have used an MXL 990 and LOVED it. Unfortunately it was only borrowed. I plan on buying one very soon and getting another 57 to dedicate to my ride.

All togther I am using 5 - 57's, 1 - Beta 52, and currently 2 - SM58's (soon to be replaced with a MXL 990)
