whats a -10dB pad

hi folks,

i love writing music but sometimes struggle with the technical side of recording it all. I recently bought a rode nt2 mic which has a switch for a -10dB pad. Does any1 know what this is for and what it does. Cheers
 
Yo Cliff- welcome to the board. The pad reduces the mics output by 10 decibals, helping to prevent clipping when recording very loud sources, such as a cranked up amp or loud pecussion. In most cases, don't use it.-Richie
